Was raking about in the garage, and came across something I've had lying about for years, which came off an old Saab I once had. Was a bit bored so decided to fit it to the old 190... Its brilliant! Roasting hot screenwash, and no electronics or relays involved!

Basically just a copper pipe, with a coil of small bore copper pipe wound around it. I've been having problems with greasy smears and streaks on my screen, and have tried lots of screenwashes and a couple of different blades, but still was a problem, but now the screen is crystal clear!! Dont worry, I'll be replacing the cable ties with proper clips in the morning.... :bannana::bannana:

Would appear excellent in it's simplicity. Although I'm not perhaps mechanically engineering proficient to spot any negatives to such a setup. Like it though!

This is cool. Did you had to cut the pipes or just fitt it over? Which saab, I might go and look in a scrap yard...
Cheers.

Standard on my car. The heated pipe is diverted through the screen wash bottle.

I'd like to know which model of SAAB had this too ?

Looks like a good retrofit .

W124's etc have heated washer nipples , the screenwash itself is just at the temperature in the engine bay .

I saw this, I was looking at my nipples too :D
But its not enough I reckon and I wonder if my nipples are getting hot anyway, no way of knowing?

Olivier, best not get this heated screen wash on your rust it will accelerate it more! :p

For reference, many newer MBs have proper heated washer bottles. There's a coil of metal piping that sits inside the washer tank and is connected to the cooling system so the whole washer bottle contents are heated. The jets are also heated on most MBs IIRC.

w124s and w126's had heated washer nozzles post 85.

The heated screenwash reservoir was an optional extra - my black w124 500e has this, not checked the Canadian one.

IIRC it was an option on earlier SAAB 900/9000s, they later changed to the heated jet type. They do come up for sale quite occasionally but seem to be quite rare.

Yeah,it was a classic 900. E reg if I remember... I have heated washer jets on my 1990 190D,to stop them freezing, but the benefit of this is hot water cleans much better, and it won't turn to ice quite so quickly in really cold conditions. The bottle would still freeze though,so a good concentration of screenwash is still needed..

The washers are more powerful now too, dunno if its because of the hot water,or the 6mm hose I used!

The top hose needs maybe 3 inches cut out of it.Same bore as Saabs though,so no problems!

Sorry but your wrong, It will freeze a lot quicker! See here Mpenba Effect

Oh yeah,I remember having an arguement about that a while back...

Surely it wont freeze fast enough to ice up the screen before the wiper clears it though..?? I've had this before with cold water many times.

If it is below freezing outside & the windscreen is freezing, the warm water will lose its heat in a couple of seconds. Even after a sweep of the wipers, the moisture left behind on the glass will freeze instantly.

If the car is moving however with the heater on & the screen is warm it should be fine. Only start up on freezing mornings will affect it.

Ive seen similiar betore where people have wrapped copper brake pipe around the rubber coolant pipe for approx 6 inchs and washer pipe on each end, you can also make one from 15 and 22mm copper pipe.
