I wonder if anyone has come across this problem. A friend decided his car needed new heater plugs. No 1 came out with no bother. Nos 2 &3 turned round but would not come out. We worked on no 3 and eventually managed to break off the nut on the end of the plug. We then drilled out the remains (a tedious job), rethreaded the head and managed to screw in new plug (total time 3+ hours) It was only when we had drilled very near the cylinder head, and started engine, did it blow out the remaining bit of the old plug. We decided to leave no2 to another day. On speaking to an expert, he said that the bother was probably due to the old plug not having been tightened enough allowing carbon to build up. Has anyone else had bother removing these plugs?

Sorry I have not personal experience on this please could you tell me how they should come of? Do you have only to un-screw with a suitable tool, if so which spanner do you utilize?
thanks so much

Mb have had loads of problems with glow plugs stickng in the head. I've known cylinder heads having to come off to remedy them. The secret to it is to get the engine very hot and then take them out with some penertrating lube. There is a special socket and extension available from mb too to aid removal.

Companies such as Delphi also provide kits for difficult to remove glow plugs which are brillliant.

Its only CDI engines that are affected.

thanks for teh info, I was wondering that a normal spanner should be OK, but it seems no!

A deep 10mm socket would be fine.

In the case of my friend's car, we had heated the car up to very hot (ie stopped fan to aid heating) and had used penetrating oil (near a full can) before we resorted to drilling out the plug. So the heating etc is not foolproof.
