Its my first winter with my mercedes and the first time i have realy used the heating. The problem is that the heating seems to take for ever to warm up. And when it does it seems to kick out more heat on the pasenger side. Now, im a selfish kind of guy and the thought of my pasenger getting more heat than me is just not on  I AM THE DRIVER, SO I SHOULD GET ALL THE HEAT!!! :p

Anyone with any ideas as to whats going on???

Thanks,
Stu

taking a long time to heat is a stuck open thermostat valve - cheap and easy fix (three bolts and a fiver)

them getting more heat - more air flow or more hot-ness?

if the latter - check the operation of the duo / mono valve - if your side is sticking a bit, and not letting full hot water into 'your' heater matrix that could caause it -but i dont knwo how your system works / if you have dual zone etc etc

ah - lookked at the epc - you have one heater core i think - therefore a mono valve. therefore might be sticking / lazy air vent valve? as long as someone gets full heat, then the valve is OK - just these pesky vacuum operated valve doofers.

try telling your side to go full hot then cold then hot a few times to un stick it?

There was a thread about this sort of thing last winter, (haven't found it yet)
Does the thumb wheel on the driver's side feel loose ? ie more sideways movement than the passenger thumb wheel ?

Mine has two valve thingys with vacume pipes going to them next to the brake servo. Are these duo valves or am i looking at something totaly unrelated to the heating system????

PJH, mine doesnt have the thumb wheels. Its got the round twist type jobies.

Just been for quite a long drive and the heat i get seems to go up and down with the engine temp.(ie, when sat in traffic i get more heat as the engine temp rises and when on the move it goes down as the engine cools!!) Should the heat i get be that sensative to the relative heat of the coolent????? With all the other cars i've owned, once its hot, its hot. If you know what i mean.

That sounds like the duo valve. Normally the valves go faulty in the open condition causing you to cook.

Try twidling the rotary control a few times and squirting the pot with some switch cleaner.

Thanks Dieselman. what is the "pot"? Sorry for being a bit thick. LOL.

The potentiometer is the rotary variable resistor the knob is attached to.

Hi

190 does not have dual controls for each side (the one i had certainly didnt). There are two dials one is for the heat and the other is for direction of air flow. This would tend to rule out the duovalve, also i dont think the 190 has thermostatic heating, from memory the hot cold heating dial does not have a white section.
Most probably the duct work to the footwell is disconnected, do the centre vents only put out cold air?

Sorry mate but my car has two heat controls. One for the driver side and one for the pasenger side. And one in the middle for air flow direction.

Was your car an early model? Mine is what they call the "mk2.

I stand corrected, the early and late model that i knew just had the single heat control. Does your car have aircon?
