Hello All, Just got a New 1973 280CE

Thanks rlowy.

Just a quick question to all. I am still quite confused about the gearbox dipstick. There are 2 lines towards the end of the dipstick which I can presume to be the min max line and then there are two big humps that are quick a long way apart (big humps). Now, my worry is that I have just filled up too much, not noticing the two lines.

Just want to confirm this. Would really appreciate quite quick replies.

Thanks,
Angus

Whereabouts in London are you ?....it's the lines and not the humps if I remember.

If you are in South London, I may be able to come and have a look.

I am not sure wer are talking about the same one 74Merc, I hope not, but it is a 1973 model with a newly resprayed paintwork. It was on sale on MerXXXXler.com in December 2002 as far as the history shows. I hope you are enjoying yours!

I think it might be the same one though I can't be sure. My 250CE is a complete rust bucket. The inner and outer sills are completely rusted thru, there is a leak from the engine bulkhead, the boot floor has is holed where the cable from the petrol runs, and the rear wheelarches need to be completely rebuilt as they are totally perforated with rust. If yours is rust free then count yourself lucky you've only got a gearbox problem!

Hi 74Merc and all,

Just wondering if you know this. I have found all my carpet are wet today when I was tidying the car. I take out all the carpets and found some holes in the rear floor. This led me to check underneath the car and it seems quite good. This led me to think whether those holes meant to be there? If so how can I stop it from leaking in? The hole in the rear is easy to find, however the front seems much harder. Have no idea where that is from any ideas?

Thanks,
Angus

get some photos up, it'll be easier to tell you if holes should be in the floor.

Are the carpets wet in the back or the front? If front, chances are the engine bulkhead is holed. Have a look under the dashboard to check. If rear, then the rear screen rubber is probably leaking. Either way, get it attended to as this could be the death sentence for old motors like these.

Cheers Popuptoaster and 74Merc,

I have uploaded some photoes to this link:

Thanks 74Merc for the advice, I think the rear looks too good to be rust, however I noticed that one side has the rubber, where as the other side doesn't, that is for the bigger hole. However the smaller ones look quite weird, it could be, as you suggested, that someone have deliberately drilled holes in it.

Thanks,
Angus

Oh yeah sorry, and is there something to cover up the larger floor brake hole?

It is wet and its damp inside, and it was storing water, holes from outside?

Thanks,
Angus
