Hello! Just wanted to say hello, as im new here, been a member over at AOC so im new to the whole merc craze.

Abit about me, call me yp, as i dont like using my real name online, currently drive an vx astra. 19 and in the southwest.

cars falling apart, as expected from a vx, and my mot went badly yesterday so i went looking for a cheap run around which will last me a year or so to save up some money for a bmw :D

fell in love with a '93 merc didnt i? looking at an E class, 200e at the moment, the 1993 model in a rather weird looking brown/red/metallic colour, 140k on the clock for a jawbreaking price of £499!

So i would love your opinion on this model, specific year, and class.. If i may? For that price, is there something wrong with it? it's MOT'd until january 2012, taxed july 2011.
Couple of very forgivable rusts and bubbles which i could fix here and there.

to make it easier, here is the link; (please dont fight me for it! :D)

1993 MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS 200 E 16V 4dr Saloon

You're probably thinking 19?! and wants a merc?! Well, insurance isn't too bad on it as quoted already..

Let me know what you think! all help much appreciated so thanks in advance

Welcome yp.

Car looks ok infact quite good. Price is for you to negotiate down from even at 499.

Tell him its underpowered and its a manual box when everyone knows the auto box is the one to have. Infact you will find the 2.0L and the manual box are a good match.

Give it a good test drive. If the tickover is very uneven, walk away.

Welcome again

Hello and welcome to the forum yp :thumb:
Looks a fair enough price for the car to me and like Trapper says, theres always room for negotiation...

Once you get the Mercedes bug, I doubt you'll be wanting a BMW....;)

Hi and welcome to the forum. That car looks very good for the price
That rusty door has to be replaced though and I doubt you`ll find one from breakers in that color as rare

Hi Welcome to the forum :thumb:

hi all,

i get a better welcome on here than my local pub! haha !

sweet, im getting right on it then!

also, what price range am i looking at for a standard set of coilies for a merc? i managed to get a set and fitted for roughly £300 on my car now, would it be roughly £200 a set? or more?

Offer £400 cos...
It's a crap colour, rusty as hell, small engine, manual, no aircon, old smoker.

Then when you get it
Colour's actually ok, rusty as hell, 200 engine isn't too bad, manual DOES suit the engine, has a sunroof - who needs aircon, classic Mercedes.

If it's ok, they are a really really nice car to drive. I ran a similar one for a year, and paid out under £50 for parts (which it didn't need) - totally reliable.

If all goes well you can sell it when you've had enough of it, and not make a loss.

And if it all goes Pete Tong? You're in it for £400. Thats a months lease cost for a Fiat.

Edit: And the number plate looks like it might be a private plate :) (to untrained eyes!

Welcome yp!

Personally, I quite like the colour and overall, from the pics, it doesn't look too bad.
Will probably make a robust, hardy companion for a while and not loose too much when you sell it on. :)

how much will an average merc cost to repair? eg, say if my clutch died, or if i ripped the gearbox out?
and how much for a set of coilovers?

Welcome!

I'm 18, don't worry, theres one or two of us youngsters about.. but these old boys ( ;) ) know their stuff.

The car looks like a bargain to me but isn't the insurance on a 2.0L W124 going to be prohibitively expensive for a 19 year old?

You say you've had some quotes - if you dont mind me asking, what sort of numbers did they come back with?
