Car
Mercedes 190d 2.5 Manual
Hi,

Im new here but this week my merc has caused me a LOT of bother!
A quick rundown - this is my main and only car now, I use it everyday covering over 1,100 miles a week, its a 5 speed Manual and has 206k on the clock.

Main Problem - the starter solenoid has NO power! If I turn the key to start all the lights are on but it wont turn over - if I then put a live from the battery to the solenoid it starts! - this is a pain in the cold wet weather we are having!!!

Other Problems - Rev counter not working, neither electric rear windows are working!

If anyone can help all all with the above problems please please tell me how to fix them!

Cheers,

Matthew.

For the windows at least the first port of call would be the fusebox in the engine compartment. There may be some relays to check there also. The fuses may not be blown but may need their contacts cleaned up. the windows are normally due to the switches playing up. try doing a swap with the front ones if they are the same.

Swapped the switched with the fronts but still they are dead!
Have to clean up the fuse box when its a dry day and see what happens there!
One thing I remembered is recently sometimes i turned the key and it would take a few seconds before anything would happen!

Ignition switch going south for the non starting.

Motors probably gone on the rear, a large number of 190Es that have rear electric windows seem to suffer from this at some point :(

IIRC the electric windows were/are fused 'diagonally' (eg N/S front and O/S rear, O/S front and N/S rear).

Easy way of checking, see if you are getting power as far as the switch, if so try another switch or apply 12v directly to the motor wires (might be green and black from memory - remove switch and check on connector)

Remember to try both polarities, one way will come up and one way will come down ;)

You can go as far as checking that the leads have not broken/shorted (check continuity) but I'd be surprised if this is the case.

Look on eBay or a breaker's yard for spares if required :)

HTH,

Will

Ok this is very strange, all of a sudden the car is starting straight away on the key, just for a couple of days it wouldnt! Wierd! Anyway, I still got to try the electric windows!

Anyone know how the "rev" counter works on these things???

Matt
