E55 AMG 2003
Hi,

I have a w211 2003 E55 AMG. The battery is completely dead and I can't access the boot. (blade keys don't work). Does anyone know where I can find a positive terminal under the bonnet to provide power to open the boot? I've looked through the forum but I can't find a solution.

Thanks in advanced.

From another MB forum

Common mistake. When you use te blade key, turn it counter clockwise, and try opening the trunk while STILL TURNING THE KEY. it will then open mechanically rather than electronicly.

Just an update... blade key didn't work at all despite every which way I tried opening it. Found the positive terminal at the fuse box under the hood and applied some power and was able to pop the trunk with the remote. It's all good.

Hi Grumpy,

I've tried everything with both blade keys, won't even turn. I have no idea where the fuse box is located in the the front, I found the ECU but no fuse box?

I found this on another thread for a standard E series but I'm not sure if it's the same on the AMG - -

'you can just see the terminal box peeping out between the cabin filter assembly (top right) and the plastic cover just to the right of the shiny wiper arm pivot nut. It is mostly obscured by the hefty bulkhead seal. It's a flat-topped black plastic box. The flat top lifts off to reveal the +ve terminal.

Out of interest, the grounding terminal is the brass post you see on the n/s strut turret.

Earlier 211s apparently didn't have these terminals, but yours is the same age as mine (near enough) so it should have them.'

Thanks for your help Grumpy.

Found another kantian, bit more info I think.

Where are all the E55 AMG owners when you need them? lol

(There is a set of posts under the hood for attaching jumper cables. You have to remove the black plastic cover at the firewall on the passenger side. The +positive post is in a black plastic box. The negative post is on the sheet metal nearby).

Thanks Grumpy,

I see what you mean, but I'm concerned that these terminals don't exist on my car. I read that Earlier W211s apparently don't have these terminals. I'm not sure if I should take this plastic cover off? I'd like to confirm if the 2003 model has this positive terminal before I tear it apart!

I've taken a photo of what I think might be the terminal but I'm not sure: http://www.tonteg.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/20120811_142727.jpg

That certainly looks like it could be the elusive terminal to me, with what could be the + pos covered box directly behind the stud and nut which is visible.

How many bolts hold the cover on, if it's only a couple may be worth taking a look.

Only other thing I can think of is if you have breakdown cover, call them out, or wait and see if other E55 AMG members can help.

Good luck anyway.

I had a look at that cover, it looks like it's one piece of plastic that stretches from the passenger side all the way the drivers side, and reaches all the way up the seal that meets the windscreen. So there is no chance of taking all that off.

Any other suggestions would be helpful?

The problem has been solved now. In the end I had to provide power to the fuse box. I never noticed it before but there is a thick red wire that feeds up into the fuse box which must come directly from the battery. I had to open the fuse box/ECU cover which is on the drivers side under the bonnet (just two sliders holding it down) connect the red jumper lead to this thick red lead which has a nut holding it down, connect the black lead to an earth, and it came to life. Opened the boot and the battery is now on charge. I think the battery is on it's last legs, need a new one which is not going to be cheap! Not sure whether to replace the smaller front battery as well though? I think this only controls a limited amount of functions?

Battery charger on low charge connected via a Power port (Cigar Lighter) will sort it.
