i agree an hpi check would have saved you trouble, even the cheap ones online will show you the mileage discrepency, just because youre buying from a garage dosent mean a thing. having said that i f...n hate car dealers, as far as legal issues youre covered whatever bulls..t they tell you!! even if you buy private the car has to be fit for its purpose and even if a private seller sells you a car with known faults you can get trading standards in. you may think its hard to prove but its not just takes a few phone calls! example i take my car for a service and im told it needs a new cat, so i sell it to you with a dodgey cat, you look through the service, ring the garage that did it last, speak to the mechanic, he tells you the cat is shot..job done, same with m.o.ts and its nealy all on computer now as proof..may be temping just to drive your car into his car lot at say 60mph and take out some of his favourite stock, but really theres no need these days do some detective work like you mentioned get original ad etc gather all your eveidence and go to trading standards, they are really helpfull and armed with your open and shut case they will make easy work of this shady tos..hope this helps..er
