help in estate choice

Means sweet FA to me mate, I buy a car and enjoy it, if it goes wrong I take it in get something new to play with for a couple of days and then get my car back fixed.

Reliability tests, NCAP tests etc. etc. just bore me. I have never even heard them mentioned on a BMW forum, but have already heard them both mentioned on here in the last couple of days, I guess you have to look for different positives with a Merc rather than just enjoying them as driving machines which seems a real shame. :(
Not at all. BMW may not mention NCAP safety tests because the 5 series comes out far less well than the E class (four stars not five). It matters if you have the bad luck to be in an accident.

And I wouldn't mention JD Power much if I finished 54th. JD Power asks thousands of owners about their pleasure in ownership -customer satisfaction. Sadly BMW owners felt very little of it!

looks like it could be a downsize from V6 and e class to 4cyl c class.Based on fuel economy, more modern car,and better residual.I do love my e class but not sure I like the chrome on latest model & C class looks sharp. What about colour white?

C220cdi sport in white would be my choice, either that or dark grey or black.

I think certain sort of people fill out those forms, I hear alot mentioned about them on Audi sites, Merc sites and Lexus sites, not once heard it mentioned on a BMW site, I think that tells you alot.

We obviously look for a different thing from each other when buying cars or products in general.
It reminds me of the avforums, 1000's of people asking others what system sounds better or which picture they prefer, which is the most reliable etc.
I just test the stuff myself, if its good for me I buy it, if it breaks down it gets repaired.

The only thing BMW have got wrong is run flats. Sales of the Bangle designs may have put off BMW and German marques owners in general off, but sales went through the roof and took BMW to a whole new level, they are even the best selling 4x4 manufacturer in Europe now, outselling Mercedes 4matic and even Audi's Quattro system, like it or not it is becoming the consumers choice.

PM Oldcro, he has a 204 320cdi. I can't imagine how a ligher smaller car with essentially the same engine and transmission be of any worse on fuel than your current E280cdi.

The C220cdi may be a downsize, but it will be sharper to drive. test both, I assume you'll go to MB of Glasgow, they'll have heaps for you and are a helpful bunch

If you do consider a BMW, and as you say space isn't a priority, try a petrol 3 series manual, just make it a 2yr old one as it will be greedy.

White or palladium silver for me, but a sport one.

Personally, I would wait till next year and get the most gorgeous estate car out there (the W212)

Of course you don't hear much about Jd Power on the BMW sites. If you finished a lowly 54th would you keep talking about it? Of course not.

Ugly, unreliable and more common than Mondeos. What a combination. But yes they do appeal to the masses. Like Macdonalds. The chavs chariot of choice.

You say the only thing they got wrong was runflat tyres. I suppose apart from being ugly, unreliable, and more common than Mondeos, you could be right. They certainly appeal to the masses. Like MacDonalds. Not called the chavs chariot of choice for nothing.

Hawk. I never knew you had such wit..:D

I owned 2 and never ate @ Macdonalds. I am a KFC man myself

I give up, bury your head mate.

I go through life and try everything, that way I can make an informed opinion about it. I appreciate the Mercs for what they are, comfortable cruisers, they lack soul, are slow, have poor consumption, and are pretty damned boring, but they have a certain something that appeals, yeah they are safe and pretty reliable, which is why they are the taxi of choice in most countries, different strokes for different folks.

I also prefer the image of Mercs and Audis, but I will not miss out on arguably the best and most rewarding all round, everyday car on the road because of snob value.
You are obviously the sort of person that cares more about the badge or label that you buy rather than the actual product?? Well that is great, I just find that extremely sad mate. :(

Enjoy your A Class. Thrill a fukin' minute!!! :D :D :D :D :D

You are so sure you are right that you just don't read what others write. I do not choose on snob value and in fact have been trying the 5 series recently including several test drives. But in the end I have chosen to buy the E class. (see another thread)

I think the E looks much nicer. I do care what a car looks like. It offers a much better ride. It has more space. It is more reliable according to major surveys (not just one person's opinion). It is safer -I do care about my safety and that of my family. Sorry if you find that boring. And if you found time to check you would know that Mercedes are not slow but offer performance up to almost any level you could wish or afford. Try an AMG E class. Your ignorance of the marque is astonishing for one who chooses to come to an MB enthusiasts website.

As for poor consumption, one of the biggest complaints by BMW owners according to JD Power is that they do not get anywhere near the mileage per gallon that the maker claims. Go to the What Car website and you can read for yourself. If you will let facts interfere with your PR for BMW.

Yes. With the spicy beans. A good snack on a long drive.

What you really want is a 10 piece value bucket, pure decadent indulgence

I haven't tried a 5 series, but to me a car is what you make of it. I find my E class really enjoyable and really involving and good to drive, but you do need to really rag it to "connect" to it in the way a "petrol head might. Its brilliant to drive fast or slow, and I suspect the BMW would appeal to me only in "high speed mode". You've had a 5 and you liked it, try an E. The car grows on you through time.

I suspect I'd love the audi's appearance and built, but I may not "connect" to it. I drove an Cayenne once, wonderful engineered but had that VAG thing that car mags go on about, utterly soulless and uninvolving. I never said that re my merc and E class.

Hawk, Just buy an E and be happy to be above the masses.;)

No point eating bread if you can afford cake..

Seeing one Tuesday. See other thread. Hope it is in good nick.
Sat in a few today. Great feeling of quality and luxury. And that long bonnet with the 3 pointed star at the end. You can really miss that.

Mentioned on other thread that there seems to be a serious difference in price North to South for very similar demonstrators. Odd. For a bargain, go North young man.

I have to say though, the BMW is not about speed, it is about the feedback and the way if responds to your inputs, I go out at midnight in the winter while its cold and wet just for a drive in the BMWs, I couldn't see myself doing that in a Mercedes, but as a work tool it is more relaxing and makes you drive in a more relaxed style which right now is what I am after.

That's exactly why I bought my Merc - effortless, relaxed 250 mile journeys.

I've never been a BMW fan but I used a 325i (E46, I think) from work for a while and it's the only car I've ever driven where I deliberately used to "take the back way home". On flowing A roads it was a beautiful drive. Another thing that amazed me is my wife has no interest in cars whatsoever and hates changing vehicles, but she liked driving the 3 Series and after a couple of weeks was taking it in preference to her own car.

Now we know why you moan so much . It's the stomach gripes upsetting you..;)

But its worth it, 10 peices of greasy chicken make all my worries of big brother (not just channel 4's sorry excuse for TV), the government and the police, fuel prices and taxation just disappear while I become a redneck eating champ for a while.

You should try it, it would make my posts less irksome for you ;)
