E350 CDI 2009
Hi All,

I am new to this forum. I have recently (only last week) bought a second hand 2009 E350CDI Avantgarde from a Mercedes Dealer. Ever since buying it I felt that is way too noisy inside the cabin once over 30mph to justify the great 'refinement' and excellent 'sound insulation' reviews I had read on various websites before buying the car. On close examination under the bonnet I found that there is no sound dampening insulation material on the inside of the bonnet (i.e the part which sits directly above the engine). This something that is present in my 2002 petrol BMW 5 series and I would have thought standard in a car of this class, especially a diesel one. On browsing the net I found some pictures of MB 350CDI which DO HAVE some sort of sound insulation material under the bonnet. If any of you have this car/same age/trim could you please look under your bonnets and confirm to me if you have a any sound insulation material stuck under the bonnet or not? any pictures that you can post will also be most helpful.

Many many thanks!

Phone your local MB dealer and the service manager will be able to tell you. Or MB Customer Service.

Except when accelerating hard I found the E class engines remarkably quiet. Road noise from tyres was irritating if larger 18 inch wheels had been fitted. But not the engines.

I have the 220CDI but see no reason why the 350 should be any different.

In the centre of the underside of the bonnet there is a black foam type insert which sits on top of the engine. The underside of the bonnet is shaped to fit it.

Should be pretty obvious if there or not, if not contact the dealer.

The question I would be asking is that if its not there, why not. I can't see why it would have been removed for any routine maintenance, has the car undergone any body work repairs?

Regards, Neil
