1999 C240 Estate
Good evening all, have just joined as i need help and have previous experience of how great forums can be.
I purchased recently a w202 240 estate on a T plate with 110k on the clock and an intermittent problem with the windows, I guess the door control module judging by previous searches online.
The problem I have us that the window problem seemed to disappear so I relaxed and then got bitten badly.
Two nights ago the electrics went haywire and this is what I have:
No windows, no central locking, no indicators, no wipers, no washer jets, no rear wash or wipe, a rear dome light that was constantly on until I disconnected it and a tow setting/sensor button with a flashing red light.
The car starts and drives, the headlights work and the stalk works for the high beam but nothing else. I've manually released the fuel filler cap but I'm looking for serious help please.
I love the drive and would like to spend time getting the car right.

All help greatly appreciated, BTW, I have no mechanical/electrical knowledge at all but my sister does work for Mercedes in Taunton so hopefully get decent rates for fixes if I can give them the heads up!

I had the same thing out of the blue a few months ago,was making a right turn, indicated,
nothing flashing,pulled over,no windows,wipers,indicators.I then tried the hazards,they
worked then I tried everything again, all working! and has been ever since.Sorry no idea
what caused it,but try the hazards and see if you get lucky.

The tow setting/sensor button light that was flashing means the alarm is/was armed.
Test the alarm, see here… http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/electronics/169666-w202-how-test-car-alarm.html

Sorry, forgot that.
Sit in car and lock it with the remote fob, stay completely still for about 60 seconds to allow the alarm to set properly then open the door/s or bonnet, the alarm should sound and the hazards should flash as described in my previous link.

I have added three procedures that are used on my CLK W208 and hopefully they should apply to your W202. To fix your ABS / ESP and window problems ready the first procedure...

Reset procedures:
Resetting car after battery fail:

Preparation Steps:
1. Make sure your steering wheel is straight.
2. Make sure your windows are all the way up
3. Make sure your sun roof is completely closed (if you have one)
4. Make sure your parking brake is released.
6. Turn off your stereo and make sure you have your stereo's Anti-theft code.
7. Turn off your heat/AC blower
8. Turn off your lights
9. Make sure your doors are UNLOCKED.

Now, disconnect battery 30 secs and then reconnect.
Get in car close the door and turn the key to position 2 (Just before you start the engine but do not start it)

1. Reseting your windows: Bring down both windows at the same time by holding the switches just before the click that brings them down automatically. Once both windows are all the way down make both switches click by pressing them all the way down and hold them for 3 secs (This lets the ECU learn that that is the end of the window track and it records it in memory). Do the same for closing the windows by holding both switches and making them click once the windows are all the way up.

2. Turn on your blower and make both sides go to 72 deg (if you have this typr of heater control) by pressing both up and down buttons at the same time. This will calibrate the ECU
3. Turn on your stereo and enter you stereo code.
4. Pull the sun roof all the way back and all the way forward then up and then done.

6. Turn all you lights on and off, including your fog lights.

7. Turn the key back to position 0.

8. Turn on your engine. You will get 2 malfunctions, your ABS and ESP lights will be on and must be calibrated.

9. Calibrate your ABS and ESP systems by turning the steering wheel all the way to your RIGHT and then all the way to your LEFT, then bring it back to the middle. Notice the two yellow lights disappear from you dashboard.

10. Let your car run in idle for about 5 minutes and then take it for a spin. Remember your ECU is still getting all the readings from all the sensors on your car so drive slowly first then faster... and so on.. you are basically teaching your ECU how to handle your car.

Wow thanks and I'll try that, probably tomorrow. Another thing is the auto open and closure for windows and sunroof works from the key fob i.e. when you hold the unlock button the sunroof and front windows wind down and when you hold the lock button they all close.

Will the re-learn procedure help with central locking and indicators and wiper/ washers not working?

Cheers all for the advice so far!

Sorry Dec but the remote fob doesn't lock the car, central locking is completely dead at the moment.

Sorry, I missed that fact too, you can’t test it until you can arm the alarm, and you need the remote for that.

Did you have these problems right from when you took possession of the car or did the happen some time after you bought the car?

Windows were sporadic when I bought it but the complete failure was only couple of days ago.

Probably best to put on Mercedes STAR diagnostic to see what’s wrong?
Don’t commit yourself to any large repair bills until you see what’s at fault.

Spookycat, nice post and thank you so much. Wipers, washers, indicators and central locking all back on line. Windows don't work at all now but that is a trade I'm happy to make at the moment. At least I'm legal now!!!

Regarding the windows, as it was an intermittent fault before the catastrofic failure of the electrics is it safe to assume it is the door control reays that have had it and will need replacing?

Thanks again for the advice, this is what forums are all about!
