hello to everyone out there. altough i've been a member of this site for some time now, this is my first post on the site, i think!.

i have a 1990 500sel w126 which is in need of some (alot of) work. i like the car too much to scrap it and so i'm turning to you guy's for some advice.

i've been through as many threads as possible to get as much info as i can to do whatever i can myself, but i can't seem to find everything.

so i'll get started,

first up is the body, mine has all the usual as the other cars i read about. rusting of the front febders and the bumper chrome. i'd like to know if the <86 models' bumpers fit 86> models. if they do are there any diffs in shape and most importantly the diff in the chrome. i've found a cheap bumper with chrome but is of the 1st gen w126. would it look out of place if i put it on my car.

also with the body i'd like to ask again about leaks, in the boot and in the cabin. i understand that for the boot i'll need to replace the rear screen seal and possibly the boot seal, so does anyone have the part number for these? also some people ahve said that it could also be the rubber around the rear lights that have dried up so not sure if i should change them as well.

as for the cabin the leak is coming from the roof onto the drivers seat. i didn't understand about what to check for by the sunroof. also someone mentioned to me that it could be that the drivers side door has dropped and so letting water in?

both rear passengers doors jam half way when opening, do i need to change the hinges or have they just dropped and so getting caught?

i think i'll sort these out for now and then post the rest of the probs at a later date.

i'd appreciate any help/advice anyone can give me and i apoogise if i have just repeated questions already answered in other threads.

thank you.

Pre 86 bumper chrome will not fit on post 85 models....the chrome is wider on post 85 models and bolt up holes to connect chrome to bumper insert in different places. Because the chrome is wider, the bumper mounts are different too, being longer to distance the bumper further from the car body to accomodate the extra inch of chrome.

So you will need chrome from a post 85 car bumper.

Sunroof - the channels drain at at all four corners of the car...there are small rubber pipe connections which you'll see at each corner when you carefully pull back the headliner. This could be the cause of leakage, but do also check the door seals, windscreen sealants first.

Rear doors - no problem with hinges, it's the door check strap, which is located 1/3rd of the way uup the door and connects to body via a 2 inch pin. Punch out the pin upwards and remove, then remove door panel, then 3 10mm bolts holding on check strap to the door...rmove and replace and refit everything. Smooth doors again !

i cant beleive its been 3 months since i first posted. talbir thank you for the your post its cleared a couple of things out for me. ill be working on the car in a few months time untill then im trying to get a hold of different parts.

im still trying to find bumper chrome. does anyone know the part numbers of all the peices for the front and rear bumpers. theres a guy in germany who is selling the front corner peices so i need to check the part numbers first before buying.

also just wanted confirmation if my rear windsheild seal is really gone or if the leak is just the boot seal. water collects in the bootlid and when i open it the water pours out like a waterfall.
