help required - instrument cluster w220

Does it require any soldering, or can they just plug in? Do you know where I can get them in the UK?

The transformers certainly are soldered to the circuit board. As you can see from the top, it isn't any single layer circuit board either, one would have to be very careful when removing the old parts.

Soldering on circuit boards like this could easily cause thermal damage to other components or the board itself. I would not recommend this unless one has good experience with that kind of work.

MB took the car in today and did a deal with Warranty Direct (50/50) and will fit a new one for free :bannana:

RESULT

I got the cluster installed today and all works fine. I now,in the new cluster, have the convenience option in settings to fold on close the mirrors. My mirrors are one touch fold but despite selecting fold on close under convenience, it does not work. I did not have this option before, just wondering if it has to be coded to work, or am I too ambitious:o

I had the same thing when I had the cluster replaced. Sorry to say it does not work. My indie tried to set it up on Star but no joy.
If you know anyone with a Star make sure everything has been set as it should be. I discovered the alarm had not been activated after cluster was replaced.

I bet Alfie or Richard could get it working ;)

I think the door controllers need to be changed for this to work. Maybe if they both fail I will get the new ones and the mirrors will close :D

"New" Instrument cluster problems

Slight potential problem with the "new cluster".
The After start menu should reset all info to zero when key is removed. In other words the mileage, hours/minutes, average mph, and ave. mpg.
Mine is stuck on the previous info, but can be reset to zero if I press the reset button, which was not neccessary before:rolleyes: Ok, no big deal, but the ESP when switched off should show up the
icon4.gif
in the cluster as a warning. The
icon4.gif
does show up when key is in position 2, and goes out like it should when the engine is turned on. This is a big deal though because if the ESP is turned off/ or already in the off position, then the car could end up "unstable" and cause an accident.
I am just suspicious about the "new" cluster. Maybe they did not reset the ESP when they removed the old one. If they disconnected the battery it definitely needs to be reset.

I will try a speedy get away on a greasy/wet road and see if the yellow warning triangle lights up to warn me to slow down!!

No, that's not how it works on mine or according to my manual. The previous after start info remains visible for w few minutes after you start the engine again or until you've covered about a mile distance.
If you press briefly the R button before it's reset, it continues the previous count, rather than resetting it. Quite handy that is.

You're explanation is confusing. The
icon4.gif
warning will come on together with all the other warning lights when you turn the key to position 2. That tells you the warning lights are working properly. After starting the engine, it should go off again, indicating that the ESP is active and working (no
icon4.gif
means: "ESP is functioning"). When you press the ESP button to turn ESP off, then the
icon4.gif
light will come on permanently, indicating ESP is deactivated.

Exactly, only trouble is when I turn it off the yellow triangle does not show up! So it could be off and I would not know about it  I suspect the ESP was not reset, if and when the battery was disconnected.

My previous cluster always reset the after start menu to zero when the car was started up again. It would flash two or three times on start up and reset to zero when flashing stopped.

That's what I said. But it's not when you start the car up, it's after a few minutes or when you've covered a mile. In the mean time, the indicator flashes and if you briefly press the R button while it's flashing, it will stop flashing and continue to count, rather than reset.

Mine is not flashing at any time, and continues to hold the previous info without resetting by pressing the R button.

Ah, ok. I agree that in that case it's not behaving properly. And yes, it's worrying if pressing the ESP button does not bring on the lamp.

Back to the dealer I would say.

They wouldn't replace my old one for free despite 36,000 recalls in the USA and hundreds in the UK. Lets hope they will replace my three day old one  Maybe these new features are included in the "new cluster" to give the driver a more "hands on experience" whilst enjoying the euphoric sensation of the flagship model :D

I will need to stop reading those MB mags in the waiting lounge at the dealers :)

Chas, before they removed the old cluster the original settings should have been downloaded/saved. After installation of new cluster the original settings should have been uploaded. This is exactly the problem I had when mine was replaced.
I would go back and tell them to hook it up to the star and put things right. It can be a long winded process from my experience so make a list of items that need putting right.

Thanks for that, beginning to think I was paranoid !!! Can you just confirm the ESP fault occurred on yours also?
I will see them on Monday. The milage was ok, as was the next service countdown. Crazy to think my ESP could be off and I could end up dead beacause they did not reset it right.
This is the third serious problem I have encountered with MB on my S320. All have been potentially life threatning.

ps

How do I check if the alarm has been activated, short of putting a brick through the window!! The red light is flashing inside as it should be. Is it ok ?

I never tried turning the ESP off so not sure if that particular problem was there. However the first time i started the car after cluster was replaced the SRS light stayed on. Took them about about 30 minutes to fix that.
It was my indie who noticed the alarm was not activated when he hooked the car up to star. I suppose another way to check is to leave a window open before locking the car. Put your hand in the car and see if the sensors pick up the movement.
Also the one touch mirror fold would not work, the indie fixed that despite MB telling me it was not possible.

The alarm seems ok. I seem to remember if a window was left open then only one flash of indicators would be seen as opposed to three flashes, when the car is locked. Is this right, or is it just when a door is left open and you try and lock the car?

Problems fixed....sloppy procedures to blame

Took the car back this morning, explained the problems with ESP and After Start menu. Apparently my car was built in Feb 2001, but registered in June 2001. The coding changed in May 2001:crazy:
Anyway they recoded the ESP and After Start menu properly this time and both now work properly :)

Bit of advice to any MB techs who aspire to F1 or anything to do with aviation........check things properly before and after.
Aircraft would fall out of the sky if the same sloppy procedures were carried out on them, and corporate manslaughter charges would be brought
