hi all

in a similar vein to another earlier thread (didnt want to hijack it), i need a bit of help.
2 or 3 years ago, a "friend" designed and built a basic website for my growing business. its basically a reference/showcase of my company's works.
he went on the missing list shortly after, without furnishing me with the software to be able to update/upload new pics, so at this stage all i show is minor works we did ages ago, we are far past that now.
with new premises comes a bigger profile, and therefore the need to spruce things up, but i have virtually nothing in the pot to do it with, so it looks like i will have to do it myself, despite being a technophobe with little pc experience.

anyone know of any pointers/software that could help me?

thanks guys

There quite alot of decent low cost software around to create a website...

Netobjects have a software... but it isn't simple to get started with that software.. however once you have got the hang of that software. it does start to become easier... (netobjects.com)

Other option I have started using alot recently is Joomla... this open source Content management software is growing in popularity... and above all its free... (joomla.org)...

However... you must also bear in mind the domain name and the hosting costs...

Hope this helps.

Thanks so far, I already have the domain and hosting done via Easyspace and would like to retain the web address. E/space though said they would want at least a grand to even look at tweaking the site. In all honesty, looking at the site today (I havent for a while) it looks very amateurish which is not the impression I want to give, but I don't want to pay a grand out either! I don't have the funds, what with the new premises setup costs etc. Catch 22 situation really.

John,

I am assuming you have actually read through the other wesbite thread which was started by AbbieCadabra - I say that because it contains a lot of technical information which starts from the basics and explains how things work.

With regards to website hosting, if you happy with your currently hosting company then there is no need to change it. All you need to do is create a new website and upload to that server.

I am assuming you have the access login/password for it.

The steps to follow are:

1. create/design your website on your PC
2. Use an FTP client ( FileZILLA is good and free) and then copy the new website to and overwrite the existing website at your hosting company.

In order to create a website, there are many different applications to create it, something Microsoft Frontpage is fairly simple to use. Some domain hosting company actually provide an online wesbite creation function that uses their existing templates to create websites witha few mouse clicks.... just some options.

Which solution will be best for you depends on how frequently you plan to update your site. If you plan on only making minor changes (or major changes on an infrequent basis) then a solution such as Front Page is probably ideal, but if you plan to regularly make changes then a solution such as a content management system (CMS) of which plenty of open source solutions exist would be best.

The CMS solution requires more work to initially set up and configure but once it is up and running making changes is usually as simple as logging in, navigating to the page to update and clicking edit.

Probably over the top but of interest to people is http://php.opensourcecms.com/ which has demos of most of the popular (and not so popular) free CMS solutions.
