Help your M157 live longer

I've had this unplugged for almost a year now, definitely nothing negative.
In my experience I did feel much better throttle response/shifting initially (now I'm used to it)
I'm overdoing my oil-changes a bit though (every 3k). Car definitely feels more "intact" and "as one" when you are pushing it etc. I don't notice lag as much.
Could be placebo though as I don't have any numbers/ logs to back this up :D

Thanks for the reply. Most information on the dry sump explains how it works but to date I can't find anything that explain in enough detail to understand if this modification would be useful. I have to assume being a dry sump the system is pumping oil at a constant pressure because it cannot rely on oil being splashed by the crank dishing through the oil in the sump. I read the GTR and GTC have the dry sump and in certain countries it was an option for the GTS, but so expensive they may as well just buy one of the former models.

I guess warming up the car properly before high loads and 6 monthly oil changes is the best way to go.
The crank webs should never be in the oil even on a wet sump engine. Which is why you should never over fill one with oil. The webs will whip the oil into foam and air will be sucked into the oil pump...modern oil with detergents just make it worse. So the irony is that you put extra oil in "to be on the safe side".... then as a result you kill your top end because of oil starvation!

I would love to see the diagrams for both the wet and dry sumps to see where the oil goes and how it is sprays underneath the pistons.

Like on most engines.... it's jets aimed up under the pistons. Part 120 in this example. They open over a certain presure....25psi IIRC.

I have been speaking MSL who put me in contact with an engine builder they know. As I type there is a GTC in for an engine rebuild due to a faulty solenoid.
Apparently the new solenoids are better than the original ones but can still fail.
That’s enough evidence for me to want to get this sorted. When it goes in the for the downpipes I’ve asked my garage to check out the wiring and price up to do the disconnect and wire in a second solenoid to stop the faults.

It's a new engine, worth sharing your experience and knowledge and journey.

Do you know if the M178 has a 4 cylinder deactivation? M177 apparently has it available on eco mode?

Not sure but I’ll find out. I bet cylinder deactivation is going to be another issue for longevity. Maybe if it has it there is a way to switch it off.

I think the m178 might have a different camshaft to the m177 but I'm not entry sure as I'm unfamiliar with the engine design. I reckon it might be a normal V8, ie all 8 cylinder running?

The oiling shouldn't stop on 4 cylinder mode, it still should receive at least 2 bars to all cylinders as they are still moving parts within the engine, it's just the fuel delivery is stopped to certain cylinders.

@badgx , how's your engine since doing this mod? I assume you still have the solenoid unplugged? Have you noticed any differences?
Cheers

It's running sweet, not much difference other than a very small trade-off in mpg which I'm happy. Thumbs up from me 🙂

Thanks for the reply, I still haven't done this yet but hopefully this weekend.

Yeah i don't think the m178 in GTC has cylinder deactivation. The m177 E and S class and GT 63 and S do in eco mode

How you finding the new purchase, do you miss any of your previoud E63 cars? Which one is your favourite out of all the E63 you had? 🙂

I wish I could have all of them haha
the w212 E63 S which i think was the most accomplished car overall (better comfort than the 213 and lighter too and compared to the PFL 212 and 211also had a great interior , LSD , 360 cam etc. Also real world fuel economy is the best . It also pulls in almost any gear ( the 213 with so many gears tends to be in too high a gear in manual mode lot of the time) . Hooning it around is a challenge as it's so powerful. The transmission can't match the engine and that's it's biggest weakness though it's not bad, just not great. Gear shifts are butter smooth though so you get that daily driver trade off. It is refined and accomplished as a luxury car with silly power. Mine on 40k miles was over 535whp so it's got bags of grunt. With a modded exhaust , the turbo whistle is a winner and the exhaust note was top notch. The handling was also as good as you can get in a big heavy car. Very impressive car. I kept it for over 3 years and if it had a bit more practicality (estate) i would have never parted with it.

The 211 is the one to go for if you want the most comfortable daily driver. Its like floating on a cloud. Its that good. When you give it the full beans, the engine really comes alive. I think overall the transmission doesn't rev match on downshifts and it's not as much of a hooligan. But for commuting or cruising, this is the best (you can retrofit android auto, reversing cameras so you can bring the tech up to date ). I didnt mod the exhaust and it didnt have a performance pack but had dynamic seats and lovely leather. The engine whirr of this and the 212 is the best engine sound on a car I've owned. At low speed with windows open, you can hear the mechanical perfection from the engine. It is loud and clean.

The 212 6.2l I had with performance pack and LSD was the perfect car for doing anything. It has the hooligan rawness. Had more than enough power and torque. The tyres I had were not fit for purpose though (MPS4 instead of 4S ) and the front and rear grip was defeated all the time. Driving it was a joy as that engine was the star of the show. But with the LSD and performance pack, the handling was just so good. Mine had distronic too and while not as clever as the 213 implementation which is so good, it was sufficient. Fuel economy is inline with the 213 ! The transmission on mine was a bit rough. Rougher than any of the other e63s' I owned. But at the same time it was very snappy and quick to change gears in manual mode i found it faster than my e93 m3 and i actually liked driving it more than the M3. It was an absolute brute and I do regret selling it to be honest. I should have kept it. Sadly it wasn't an estate and that was the only reason I parted with it. I may swap my m3 over for an E or even CLS 6.2 shooting brake (as long as they come with an MCT rather than older torque converter) .

Now over to the 213. For many years I missed my c63s estate which i probably slightly preferred vs my E63s 5.5 because of how loud it was and how good the transmission and tech was ( the 212 was just too quiet in the cabin, too refined). The 213 seemed to be a larger version of the s205 on paper therefore giving me more practicality being a bigger car. The tech is even better in the 213. I'm not enamoured by the AWD ( power going to the front wheels is just not my preference and takes getting used to, though i hardly notice it now). The weight of the 213 is not ideal though i can't feel the weight when I get to push the car. I was a bit unimpressed with the ride quality but increasing the tyre pressure has more or less resolved that and it rides just fine now. The tyres are super wide and fuel economy is atrocious. The tech is great even in the PFL 2018 I bought (as it had no OPF) , and the exhaust is the best out of all the cars because of the multiple butterfly valves. Comfort mode with exhaust valves open is the mutts nuts, but put it in sport plus and boom, it's beyond antisocial and I like that this option is there when I want it. You can stick it in manual mode in any engine mode too. I can get it to sound like a beast accelerating from a stop at low speeds but then it's trickier to get good sound out because of the silly power. It is so fast. Its the only car that I feel the G force on when I'm pushing it. It is definitely a special car and handling even given it's a heavy porker is physics defying for sure. It isn't very fast at all if you're in the wrong gear and the 9 gears can be tricky to deal with in manual mode if you want to accelerate with brute force and you'd need gear 3 or 4 at that speed so that adds a dimension of involvement. I don't think I felt that in the 5.5 which I though pulled so impressively in almost any gear. In the right gear the 213 is a rocket ship. It shifts gears instantly and the engine has been tuned so brilliantly that it is mega responsive. The 5.5 i felt was lazy to begin with but once it got going, it was dynamite. The 4.0l seems much faster still which i thought was impossible haha

They're all great in their own way. Sorry for the word salad ! I'd happily own any of them long term! Each one is very special (especially if it has a performance pack and LSD)

^ Excellent write up on each model.
Did you ever have the 5.5 remapped? I found it made a huge difference to the stock version with BHP and torque close to or more than the 213 4lt.

Thanks, i didn't remap it. It was bone stock. I only got an iPE valved exhaust on it. I had read somewhere and few folks informed me that remapping wouldn't make the throttle more responsive , albeit it would have crazy power and torque increases for anyone interested in even more grunt. Also I had watched all those Tasos videos and thought not to remap ! I actually am enjoying lowerHP cars like the 6.2 because I can actually feel I'm pushing the car to its limits (more visceral and raw)

Yeah, fair enough. The bent con rods scenario with a remapped engine was always in the back of my mind but fortunately mine didn't miss a beat in 3 years. (Thanks MSL/Big Fish)
I also understand the reasoning behind having a car with less power. You are able to use more of it compared to these crazy fast Biturbos, but that initial thrust from standstill makes me giggle.
Glad you are still enjoying your 213. It's nice to read how owners are finding them.

Thanks buddy for the owner write up, appreciate the valuable feedback. After reading through feedback, I have decided to hold onto my E63 M157 for a bit longer. No need to rush, enjoying the fuel economy and the exhaust note 😎

I think we've been blessed with such good E class models with manic engines. They're all great for sure.

The 157 definitely has mad thrust but the m177 in that E is even more ridiculous (in the right gear). The 157 is very beefy all the way to the red line which arrives too quickly! It pulls and pulls, it is a beast.
I quite liked how much torque the 156 had, even that engine had more than enough low down grunt to beat physics easily albeit it never gets to crazy 800nm+ levels like the twin turbos.

Alas I think i need to try the m113k next so no more 156 or 157 anytime soon

You'll enjoy the M113K.
Had mine 6 years and loved it.
