hiya,

I have been lurking for a while, I tend to hang out at the merecedes190.co.uk forum or the rev but have often come and followed the goings on round here :)

Just thought I would post in case any of you folks are interested in running merc diesels of veg oil. I have just got back from an epic tour of europe in one of my 190d's powered by veg oil. Basically from uk to croatia and back. Can I post a link to another forum or should I copy the post to this forum ?

blog of the trip is here :-

Any questions, feel free to ask.

ps, I was reminded of the forum by a lovely automated birthday email :)

Welcome !

My neighbour and I recently looked at a system to convert veg oil to diesel (1500 litres per day !!) for £995. We had a source of oil although needed to look at the red tape and disposal of waste product.

Went back to the supplier for more info but they had just disappeared !. On reflection may haave been a scam.

Interesting journey with the 190.
Any issues running on veg-oil?

Hello.

I know nothing about veg oils, 190e's, or holidays in Croatia but that does not stop me from saying...........

WELCOME!

Portzy.

welcome mate you are in the right forum.

Is a veg oil car really carbon neutral?

never mind the signature, i am not anti the green process, just anti the politics that turns a good cause into a cash milking cow

Hi Kentronix, welcome to MB Club.

Excellent work on your achievement. Any means by which taxes can be avoided are fine by me!

Hello and welcome to the forum from me and hope you enjoy your stay

thanks for the warm welcome.

Its only carbon neutral if your running off waste oil. New oil takes a small amount of fossil fuels to produce and some more to get it to the shops. We pick our waste oil up in the veg car so from the point where it becomes a waste product (after used for cooking) to the point its put in the car it uses no fossil fuel.

Burning the fuel does release carbon into the air but its the same amount that tha plant took out in the first place so its overal carbon neutral.

For the trip we ran pretty much off bought oil so technically it wasn't neutral but its close, and its now running off waste oil.

To legally collect waste oil from restaurants in the uk you need to register with the environment agency and pay a small fee but once done you get free fuel so its well worth it IMO.

Dont get me wrong, I do like fast cars, I have a 2.3-16v and a 2.6 which currently has a 3.0 engine in it. The veg oil cars (we have 2) are for company trips and long journeys.

Hi and welcome :)

My 5 litre V8 SL500 is more environmentally friendly than most family hatchbacks.

(because it's only averaging 1700 miles a year!)

So if they do the same how does that equate.

Isn't it a good job emissions are measured per kilometer..

I like the idea of running Veg oil :D The van is partial to a drop of Morrisons finest rape seed oil :)

I used to put crisp and dry (egg cup full) in the petrol tank of my old FS1E.
Smelled like castrol R, but cheaper:D

.

Nice to know.
Now we need to stop the government building houses all over the greenbelt areas and plains, and stripping the area of plants as drivers do not like being blamed for floods and the like.
Have you tried bio diesel as well?

yep, its illegal in france (and italy for that matter) so in order to get from the ferry in dunkirk across to belgium we put a little bio in from near dover. Prefer the veg though its quieter and smells much nicer. It does make you hungry though. Start a drive a little peckish and you will finish it starving and heading straight for food.

Bio is quite hard to find though, veg oil can be found in any shop or restaurant :)

Just a bit sceptical smelling of chicken chow mein or fish and chips.
Does it not linger on your clothes and around the car
