1994 E200 W124, engine often revs at around 2500-3000 when I put into neutral. Happens quite often. Most of the time it will come down to around 1000 after 5-10 seconds but every now and then it just keeps revving. It is getting really annoying...
I took it to a mechanic the other day and was told it could be the "stepper motor" and that it can cost 250-300 pounds second hand. He pointed to clicking noise coming from around the throttle body.
It sounds a bit pricey so could someone please enlighten me what a stepper motor is, is it likely to be at fault and does it really cost that much.

I would spray the throttle body with Seafoam or similar (Subaru upper engine cleaner) to remove carbon from butterfly area 1st.
