I'm having my diesel high pressure pump replaced this week. I don't know enough about the situation to go for a repair to weepy pipes of even using a Bosch repair kit so I've taken my Indie's advice (I do trust him) and gone for a replacement recon pump. Surprisingly the Merc agent who's supplying the pump said that they don't do a NEW one - only recon !!

So - is this usual? Are Merc recon'd pumps OK and ...
Is it more common to see failure on the 270 engine than say the 200 or 220? (My car is 7.5 years old).

Diesel Pumps

Well, I didn't get much of a response so I'll respond to myself !!!

Yes, apparently the C270 diesel pump is not a solid casting like the C200 and C220 pumps - and they are more prone to failure than the others.

Oh, really?
Thank you !!!

The merc pumps are reconditioned by Bosch, and, as far as i know, it is the same type of pump fitted to the 200, 220 merc cdi's which also suffer leaks.

I've recently replaced my hp pump, i got it from Euro car parts and it was also a reconditioned unit, the first one they supplied me with was leaking and had to be replaced!

Thanks, Panason1c.
I'm hopeful I don't have your bother as the pump was supplied by a Merc Agent - a reconn'd unit.
As I say, Merc told my Indie that C270's have different castings and are more prone to leaking than 200's and 220's.

Merc do sell a seal kit for the HP pumps but it does not fit some. I tried on a 53 Plate ML270 CDI and it was wrong, so bought a recon pump from Euro's and has been fine ever since.

Hi, I am having the same problems with fuel leaking from the hi p pump. It is definitely not the pipes in my case. I am currently in the process of ordering the seal kit.
Has anyone who as already done this got any does or donts before I start to tackle taking the pump off and apart?

Not had one fail yet - I assume that the overwhelming whiff of diesel is a good indicator of failure?

I didn't do the job myself so I'm not sure what's involved with the seal kit.
If it's any help, I had a look at the old pump and it was pointed out to me where the leak had occurred. There are three plate-like covers bolted onto the outside of the C270 pump. They are equally-spaced (120 degrees apart) and it's where these plates are bolted onto the casting that the diesel leaks from - and I could see where it had been coming from. My Indie tells me that the C200 and C220 pumps are all one casting and do not have these plates bolted down onto the outside.
Strange, eh?
