Hillman Imps / Our other cars

Have a "whale" of a time and remember: "Rubber side down."

Next Check Point was Barnby Moor, Retford, near Blyth.

White car (Jimmy) decided shortly after turning off the A66 onto the A1 that it had very little power.
We figured out that pumping the throttle got us some more power so we carried on to try and get to the next check point.
Made it safely where we could then investigate the problem but were now behind shedule.

After trying many of the basic things it was concluded it was a carb. problem.
New Old Stock (NOS) basic Solex had been fitted some weeks ago to give us reliability over performance.

Stripped carb. down and found it had fractured inside at the main jet.

Rebuilt a "frankencarb" and got this going and back on our way but we were delayed about 4 hours so no way we will make the booked ferry to Calais.............

Staff in Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa where we got stuck were excellent.
👍

Brought us out hot coffee as it had started raining quite heavy half way through the repair.

Bought a bear for grandaughter to take on the adventure.

There's some nice people around. 👌

We made it down to Newark services by about 20:30 where we had to stop and grab some hot food and drinks.

Then Maidstone services at 01:27 where we had arranaged to meet with a friend to pick up some more spares (carbs.). Left there 7 minutes later.

Got to the ferry terminal at 02:41 and they put us on the next ferry at 03:10.

Made it to the hotel in Calais at 06:13, just enough time for a shower and change before leaving on the next leg at 08:00!

Both cars running sweet now but we are keeping revs. down with the aim of making it there in reasonable time rather than racing the larger cars. ;)

We tohught about replacing the "frankencarb" on Jimmy with one of the ones we picked up but are adopting the policy of if it's not broke don't fixt it. :)
What a great adventure, looking forward to the next update! Good luck!

Sorry about the rain, but if you can make it through Saturday, you'll be set for the week.

At least we've got the Tractors and the burning manure out of your way.

Next leg is around 600km, Calais to Langres via Reims and Bar sur Aube.
Route in France where possible misses out the motorway so as we get futher south we end up going up and over the French Alps.

A stop off at the scrutineering in Reims where there were some nice cars to be seen.

Ooh that's nice:cool:

Love the additional spot and fog lights. Definitely "completes the look."

As if even an early R107 is ever going to be short of light going over the Alps at night.

We got pulled in the UK scrutineering for having 4 x spots on one car and had to disconnect 2.
Regs. say maximum 4 x "auxillary" lights, scrutineer took this as max. 4 x lights and no explaining would change his mind to we just cut the wires to 2!

I was young and silly (still am just not young now ) and had my cb spots on my Mexico wired to main beam , was stopped and made to cut wires there and then. Lesson learnt don’t think it was.

Scrutineers !

There are several words for them. Fine volunteering fellows that they are.

I particularly like the way that the four additional spots on the R107 appear to be pointing every which way but forward.

(Reminds me of all those threads we have about people anxiously worried about making their headlights point in the wrong direction for Europe.)

Made it safely to Langres via Bar sur Aube & Chaumont where we had to check out some more landmarks for answers on the Route Card for extra marks.
This has been an ongoing thing where you answer a simple question such as the name of a cafe or number of bins at a bus stop but if you look on google maps they have changed. ;)

Not many places open for dinner which seems to have been a theme for us.
One of the guys ordered a "cowboy pizza" which said it came "with" chips.
These were actually all over the top of the pizza along with spare ribs etc. 👎

Cars ready for next leg which is Langres - Gray - Dole - St Jean en Royans - Gap.

Imho it looks as though someone in that cafe really didn't like you guys..🤯

The weather appears to require the rest of those lights, judging from that view.
Have fun today, and thanks for keeping us updated on your progress.
