Hillman Imps / Our other cars

Fitted a New Old Stock carb. onto Mildred yesterday, still not running right.

Going to drain and flush the fuel system next to rule fuel out.

This thread is terrific. My parents had an Imp in light blue when I was born in 1967, I believe it was the first or second of two they had.

As a baby I was routinely transported - even on long journeys - on the rear parcel shelf in my cot. None of that health and safety nonsense in those days!

I recall from conversations with them that one car was reliable, the other routinely boiled over and was affectionately known as 'the kettle'.

Poor Mildred is still in the garage awaiting attention.

Got a fuel filter to do in the W212 so may around the same time pump the fuel out of Mildred as I usually use a small pump and fill the new filter on the W212 to save it spluttering on startup.

My parents had an Austin A40, and my sister used to travel behind the back seats whenever we went from Middlesex to Nottingham to stay with my grandparents (this trip took an entire day). On one occasion the bootlid fell open while we were on the M1

This is us broken down on the hard shoulder, mid-'60s:

If its the OM651 engine, good time to check / replace the filter housing while you are at it.

It’s very pretty, the A40, I guess to be expected being designed by Pininfarina. I feel quite wistful for that motorway scene, even though I wasn’t born until 72!

No spoilers, but.... £4,500....

Engine out, gearbox out, gaskets/seals/o-rings replaced.
Clutch etc. all checked.

Spots, heater blower, washer pump, roof rack added.

Test run, heater not working.
New heater matrix fitted, new test run tomorrow.

Fixed Mildred btw ages and ages ago, the NOS carb that we fitted was factured internally, had to use some parts from other old one to get one good carb.
