Hmm... This doesn't look good (R172 SLK55)

I had that on my SLK
ABS wheel sensor confirmed by the mobilo chap and my diagnostic plug in thingy.

ABS will not function, so if you break hard one wheel will lock, the other side won't, the car will spin out of control.
£70 for the part from MB and the mobilo chap fitted it on the drive in under an hour.

Oh, and that spin out of control is a real possibility hence it should not really be driven....

Call me "old fashioned," but ....

have you thrown a rug or a coat onto the floor and looked underneath for a damaged cable or connector?

Some of us were driving before ABS was invented, and braking hard without ever spinning out of control.

While I agree with you, the issue is how ABS on one side would react if the other side locked... I suspect, like you that, it would handle it, in the same way as would happen if one side of the car hit ice, or oil, but I'm not certain.

But in the real world, at this time of the year, how often do any of us actually activate our ABS ? Especially when we know there's an issue.

I don't think you understand ABS, it's either working on all 4 wheels or if it detects a fault it's switched off completely.

You know what? I've never triggered the ABS on any car I've driven fitted with it.
If my vans had had it, I would have done a couple of times, but otherwise, nope!

I trigger it on purpose now and again (on all of out cars) , this time of year a little used lane near my moms house is covered in wet leaves , slow speed testing of ABS often possible.
I do too. It means that if it does activate I’m familiar with how the car behaves and won’t be “taken by surprise”. It’s also a useful indicator of how much grip you do or don’t have available.
Took a real leap of faith to test it on the motorbike the other day.
It certainly does! My K1600 has cornering ABS that works when the bike’s banked over too. I still haven’t plucked up the courage to try that feature out 😳

I do regularly.

There's a junction I use daily which is at the bottom of a hill and has a shiny manhole near the white line. When it's wet my front wheel hits is just as I'm braking.

You're right, as I said, I don't understand ABS.

But I do understand that Squirrels love eating ABS sensor cables, having replaced four such cables on two BMW's and an MX5, twice, over the last three years.

But not everyone lives on Wimbledon Common.

Which ones you Mike?? 😇

As promised, an update:

Issue was caused by a faulty OSF Wheel Speed Sensor (well done to those who did the remote diagnostics ;) ) which has been replaced, and all is now back to normal.
