As I selected drive, this message flashed up, the brake pedal went loose for a second and then thumped into drive? No red flashing message but just as above?

Car is a s211 e280 estate 56 plate.

Isnt that something to do with the brake hold function on newer mercs?

I dont have it on my car :(

Yes. On my C220 ('11 model) ...
Bring the car to a stop then depress the brake pedal quickly/firmly once. HOLD light will be displayed. Car is now stationary (and engine off with start/stop in eco mode), with brakes applied and showing brake lights until next driver input (touch accelerator or move steering wheel).

I didn't think this was a feature on the 211? Try it again later

It is a feature, although how you're describing it is a bit odd. I presume you had your foot on the brake pedal when this happened?

When stationary holding the car on the brakes in D or N, you can give the brake pedal a sharp extra push and "HOLD" will appear on the screen. This will keep the brakes on for you even if you release the pedal, until you either pull away or drop into P.

It makes a handy alternative to the less-than-nimble foot-operated parking brake. The only problem I have with it is that the brake lights remain lit whilst the HOLD function is in operation. That's how it works on my post-facelift S211: the pre-facelifts had SBC brakes which were different mechanically, although I believe they had a similar function.

It's all described in your owner's guide, which you should find inside your rear armrest. If you don't have a copy, see here:

As mentioned this is the Hold feature(very useful on gradients as you don't need to use the handbrake, disengages as soon as you press the throttle).

So I have hold :)

For some reason I didn't think this was in mine? But iirc I moved the car into reverse then into D but stopped to talk to someone who came over... And as I have drive off I've accelerated like normal noticing the hold flash )

Just took the car out and indeed it works, actually like it!

Clearly I have to read the manual)

Like most of us we only read the manual when we have a problem/find something new:o

On the other side there's a thread called "I never knew that", where things that you never knew your car could do are told to the world - though sometimes to the amusement of others who did know.

This would have been a good example.

I think that "on the other side" refers to a different MB forum.

So is this a replacement for the wonderful SBC system then?

Certainly is a great feature, I have it on the E coupe. However, don't use it for extended periods such as major holdups as the LED brakelights will overheat and fail!
