How a Concours R107 SL is judged

That is gorgeous! How long did it take you to get it to this condition?

Really wish I had not viewed this thread! Thought my SL was "reasonably" clean under the bonnet . Now I realise it is actually rather shabby and I need to spend a lot of time cleaning and painting. I will have to send you an invoice! What paint did you use one the rocker covers,and have you had any issues with it flaking/cracking? I was thinking of getting mine machine polished , but not sure if they will buff up that well.

cheers

Hi Martin, sorry for the very slow reply... but to answer your question the rocker covers on my SL are not painted, they are satin black powder coated.

On your car they are aluminium so if you polish them up I think they could look a bit bling.
I would suggest having them satin chromed,this gives a long lasting natural looking finish.

This is my Concours 1986 420SL (now retired) I have taken a set of photographs to help anyone who wishes to restore their own SL back to factory condition and also to show what the judges look for at a concours event. Concours Pictures

It's just over a week to go before the start of the Mercedes-Benz club National concours event, which is held at Milton Keynes. R107 entrants may want to click on the above highlighted link for some tips on showing your car,

Excellent work on keeping your car in that condition, good luck at the next show, let us know how you get on

Thanks for the kind comments Dave. I have now retired my 420 SL from Concours events, so no more serious cleaning for me anymore:)
The reason for my original post was to help others who wished to restore a R107 either to concours standard or to original factory specification. I hope my photo library has been a useful reference for a few folks on here.

Rash would mess himself looking at those pictures.

Lovely car....

Simon has jokes today :rolleyes::D

Indeed, lovely car.
