Hi guys,

I want to set up a basic website, nothing too fancy for my dad. What are some simple instructions to do so?

Hints and tips would be much appreciated. :bannana:

You'll need:

1) Hosting space - (your ISP may already provide some space for you to place your site as part of your contract)

2) Web designing tools You may have something like Frontpage already on your computer. What you need depends on your own skill 7 preference. If you are just starting I'd recommend something that allows you to design your page and does most of the coding for you behind the scenes

3) A domain name. Have a think about a www name (probably more creative than www.NWMercDad.com) most .com domains can be registered online in the US and can cost anything from £5-£10 per year to lease.

You can get a bundle including name registration and hosting from many UK suppliers. I'm sure members here will post suggestions.

TOP TIP

Start simple - I mean VERY simple

eg make a page with a couple of words on it and 'upload' it so it is online on your webspace wherever you get is hosted.

This will teach you how to start and save a web page in its basic but correct format, upload and view it.

Once you can do that then start elaborating on the page designs etc

ie add more words, add pictures, add links to either send email or change to other web pages.

Many make the mistake of designing the perfect web page to start with and then cannot get it uploaded etc etc and get jarred off and quit.

Next tip is once you get going and have a decent page designed if you want to 'improve it' dont improve the actual page itself - save the actual page as another name and change the new one then you always have the first one to refer to or carry on using if you **** up the layout of the new one etc.

Go for it and enjoy . . .

Deffo go for simple - but another top tip - story board and route map what you want it to do before you start to build it. Post-it's are a great tool for doing this ;)

Helps no end when you then come to build and link each page etc.

If it's for your dad's hobby or something or a family page then the advice above is fine. If it's for your dad's business, then he should hire a pro because a website is part of a marketing strategy and you wouldn't pay a monkey to design an ad to be placed in a newspaper... get what I mean?

Not everyone who isn't a pro is a monkey.
