How do you remove shift knob in a w202?

I have a '96 C220 (W202) and i want to know how to remove the shift knob.
Apparently on older merc models the knob is attached to the shaft and removing the knob will result in having to remove the shaft. I was wondering
if this is true about the 220. If not, how would i go about taking off the factory knob?

not sure if yours is the same but on my W208 CLK all u do is turn the black bit at the bottom of the knob and then pull the knob off the stalk.

the w208 CLK is the same as the facelift w202, twist the base then pull off, the pre-facelift models are quite different.
