How much are you paying for new number plates?

Just taken a look at Halfords as they are the ones I use at the current price is £36.

I am quite happy with the bog standard plates these days but back in the day I had plates given to me as a pressie which had a photo image head shot of one of my Black Great Danes either end of my reg number and had that for the longest time. I must admit to not being all that keen on the 4D type though, just another place to catch debris I'm thinking, but each to their own as always.

I've never had any complaints with Halford's but probably the main reason for going there is convenience.

The other thing I have on just the Merc is Wurth plate holders and while I like them, you will no doubt get plenty of folks that don't. I found them a cinch to fit onto my car and just as easy to fit the metal plates I got from Halford's.

There are some thoughts that the Wurth holders make it easy for potential theft of plates, but to that I would say this: a potential thief would need the little key or home made device to gain access to the plate inside, I have personal plates which are more conspicuous and thus possibly less desirable for theft, and I believe it is just as easy if not easier to rip off a plate stuck on by adhesive pads, or to carry a double ended screw driver (flat head/pozi) used to remove plates held on by screws.

I will say this though, the original Wurth plates I bought can't be said to be cheap at £25, compared to the several makes out there built on the same lines that cost a lot less, but given mine have been on my motor 4 years so far, then to my mind they have paid for themselves already and have been well wUrth the original outlay... had to be done ;)

I've got one of these hanging off the chrome bumper of my Zhiguli, although it must be some kind of knock off version.
It's a good idea, but the front number plate plinth of the MB is so curved that I'm not sure how well this would work.

Anyway I've had a pair made up and I don't plan on using an additional holder for this car.

Got them made up at MB Hemel Hempstead.

£32.40 so slightly cheaper than Halfords, but most importantly no naff text at the bottom like the cheaper plates and no "Dishonest Used Car Dealer" text like the current plates 😃

That's silly cheap. I'll find out what my local charges and update on here.

Probably double that now 🤣

How can you not do fronts?

I've never been too comfortable with reg plates online, you gotta show proof of V5 right? I suppose they look like a reputable seller. Their company name isn't too bad...
Not always , buy from ROI or IOM to avoid the formalities .

Even buying from UK suppliers , they often don't ask for paperwork , last year I got some nice metal 2D plates from an online seller for my trailer and cycle lighting bar .

Sounded a bit painful so I had to look it up just to be sure and well I live and breathe, 'tis a new one on me ...

Good catch and so long as you're happy that's the main thing 👍

Yep, here it is, complete with number plate plinth fixed with 90 deg brackets to the bumper:D

And the car is in the centre of the parking bay. No fibbing, how many shots did it take to get there

Remembering the "armstrong" steering on my BIL's Lada Riva, several I'd guess 😅

Fantastic and your motor looks in good nick going by the front end vie piccy.

A bit of trivia ...

Zhiguli cars existed in their own right as you will know, and did so from 1970 - 1912 being made by AvtoVAZ, with a few more being produced for the next 2 years in Egypt when production ceased in 2014.

The transition over to Lada brand occurred in the 1990s for a number of reasons, e.g.
* a more internationally marketable name was desired
* moving away from similar sounding names in other languages that had unpleasant connotations to them such as the Italian word 'gigolo'
* a move away from the outdated model being based on i.e. Fiat 124 as safety and efficiency had improved
* a move to focus on changed consumer needs

Furthermore, the Soviet Union had collapsed in 1991 and several Zhiguli models were exported as Ladas, only to find themselves re-imported and thus becoming known as the Russian domestic brand.

Lada did cease production temporarily in March 2022 due to sanctions and supply chains being cut off, but some cars were still being produced: Granta & Niva

I was interested to see that Renault held a 68% majority stake in AvtoVAZ from 2016 - 2022 until they sold it lock stock and barrel back to the Russian government for a so called 'symbolic' one rouble. There was a 6 year option to buy back, but I can't see that happening myself.

They were sold in the UK as Lada's from 1975 onwards.
I stand corrected and not the only thing I got wrong - doh!

"The Lada 1200 saloon was first seen in Britain at the 1973 Motor Show and, to quote the Haynes Manual ’caused quite a few raised eyebrows, not because of any startling design innovations, but because of the extremely low price.’"

The bargain C180 I've just bought has some naff used car dealer plates on it, and they're looking a little worse for wear.

I'd quite like to get some new plates made up at the local MB dealer, complete with those fancy MB stainless steel screws (four per plate!!) and the writing at the bottom that will say Mercedes Benz "dealer location",

Am I looking to get absolutely shafted or worse, laughed at for going to the dealer for reg plates?

I think I paid about £35 for the pair in Halfords recently for another car.
I paid £25 for a pair of 3d plates on ebay a couple of weeks ago. In my opinion, they look great

I’ve just spend £35 on new plates from Number1Plates. I wanted to get the plates with the UK symbol on them as I don’t think Halfords do that?

Not legal on any car registered after 51/2001 though... assuming you meant 3d... and not 4 d (the ones with raised stuck on characters) which are legal.... the only crime there being with the taste police!

I think they do. Or at least, they always used to.
