How to find out original build spec from vin number?

Hi guys, I have a question, I have been reading some archived posts and people have been posting the original build specs of their cars from the vin number ( i think) I hope im posting this in the right section lol. I am intruiged as to how this is done??? Thanks in advance.

tried my vin from the v5 didn't work, however this link works

And my 1998 E 300TD was built in 2002 at least that is what it says.

The benzworld software assumes that your car was built for the USA, it is not set up for European or other region VINs!

I can also work out options from a VIN, please PM your VIN to me and I will see if the catalogue lists your vehicle
