Buying a new car as a private purchase. Whats the best way of checking for outstanding finance, milege accuracy, insurance status etc. I have heard HPI is good anyone recommend a more detailed one?

dont do one of those crappy £5 internet ones.. they tend to tell you false information, e.g. they will say something like car may have accident damage, then they ask you to pay a lot more only to tell you it was a false alarm.

use the AA or RAC ones.

HPI is good and worth it as they offer a guarentee, so if the car is not as they describe and reposessed due to being on finance, they will refund the value of the car.

Well they all pretty much feed into Experian...

I have an account directly with them.

Alternatively give me a buzz and ill do it for you..
basic £10
with mileage check £15

If you are buying new, why the bother to check, buying secondhand I can understand.

Full report on them in this weeks autoexpress...

Experian came out top - autotrader too was good and so was Rac

RAC one is fine and costs a fiver, HPI 's own web site is £20 for the same data & their web forms are pretty much identical.- RAC give same info as HPi . I had a small issue this week and when i queried it I got a phone call directly from HPI to say they had made enquires and had their records corrected. My car showed finance from the wrong finance company. A good tip when selling a car is to HPI it yourself for a fiver to make sure that it shows up as it should.

Just as an aside, Experian are a major company now with many offices around the globe, but they started out as an alarms company working from a small office.

Small acorns, hey.
