and what a good way it was for a prospective number plate cloner to also make sure that the plate he was going to use was unlikely to be stopped as it was on the MID.

They don't just use random numbers - they either nick the plates or see them on a car that's the same as theirs, exactly the same, if possible.

That's why you're supposed to squiggle out the reg plate on pictures posted on the web.

"I just got thinking..." (that'll be a first ;) )

If it is any reassurance, its not as simple as that and the drivers of cars with cloned plates get caught out all the time (some are unsuspecting -naive- drivers of stolen cars, others more malicious).

It doesn't stop the buyer from paying for a stolen car but it does mean they stand a far better chance of being stopped.

Erm,,, what's the MID? :o

Oh I see - then perhaps if you read what I wrote....

Just a suggestion that if I wanted for example to avoid paying the congestion charge I would get an ebay set of plates made of another 220CDi and just to make sure that the chances of being stopped randomly were effectively nil , then I would check the cloned number on the MID, which 99% of the time will give me the info that I want -

If I drove a reasonably tidy car and fancied a bit of naughtiness I could make sure that a stop caused by ANPR would be nil by checking first.

That I rather gathered ....

Why squiggle out the number plates ? you can't do it on the road ...

No, you can't.
But someone in Scotland would have to travel to Rochester to see my cars' plate, but if I had a pic of it on here, they could see it instantly from their own armchair.

Cloners probably spend ages looking on sites for info and if you don't block out your reg, you make their job easier.
