Car
A140
hi all.
im new to the site so hi everyone!!

i purchased a A140 1.4 petrol manual 2001 today.

being a mechanic im happy to buy this car knowing the starter motor isnt working. now reading other posts im realising its going to be a pig of a job.

however reading other posts it could be ecu orearth problem. starter motor sounds like a dull drone when trying to start? it doesnt sound like it wants to work or die sounds weird. so thought needs replacement. but could it be suffering with crap connections or ecu failer??

any way one question has been bugging me. why has noone suggested going in from the top? e.g remove intake manifold etc?? ive seen sugestions of dropping sub frame, removing engine even cutting up inside the car!!!!! is it impossible to replace going in from engine bay??

ifim going to be going in from underneath and drop the subframe wouldi have to remove any suspension parts etc (i want to use roadside car ramps and a large car jack to support the engine) is this do able?

also ive heard about an imobiliser inside the starter motor on certain models!!! MAD!! what would be the chance i have this type?

anyway sorry about the rambling and the essay!! cheers

I do know it is not possible to get to it from the top, removing the manifold won't give you enough room, you have to drop the rear of the engine, not sure if you would have enough room using ramps, probably a job on a lift, but I guess where there is a will you might do it on
the ground, pig of a job by all accounts.some do have the immobiliser in the starter, check with vin at MB.Good luck.

Interesting, that will take longer to do,lots more work.

Need the vehicle on a lift, & lower the subframe & engine assblie down at the rear.
You can get to the starter at full stretch, no chance on the floor on ramps.
Books at 4 hours

You do need to be able to lower the subframe, at least partially. The best way is to undo the strut tops and lower everything down.
This is a 1.7 Cdi, but the 1.4 petrol is similar.

hi all.
i can confurm you can access from engine bay. quite tight but after about 2 hours i managed to remove starter motor. turns out the 'dome' part of casing by flywheel was compleatly snapped off!!!!! (ill post pic in amin.) straight away is the thought where is the other part? in the bell housing? wouldnt i hear itbanging around? i drove about 30 miles without a problem or any noises! should i split and look for it? also why would this cause a droning sort of noise?
anyway i have got my replacement starter motor and found out about imobilisers in someof them! is there any distingishing features for this? i saw something about 049 in my service book. i dont thinkmy car has the built in imobiliser but does this replacement one? what would happen if it did andi fitted it?
on the bright side i got a whole leather interior for the car today and loads of other parts i needed :)
anyway ill addpics in next post.tell me what you think.
cheers lee

this is the paperwork i cannont see a 049 code so i assume i donot have a imobiliser built into starter motor

i feel like im talking to myself now! :( lol turns out starter motor is wrong!! checked code of old starter D7E18. cameupwith some codes. none of which matched new starter motor, also checked with new starter codes and nonethe same as old!! so starter motor for sale!!! lol will swap for one that fits!! lol
