Just purchased a C200 sport auto on the 'W'.
It has the usual 3 button IR remote key. When placing the key in the ignition, I cannot hear a click as is normal. When turning the key to position 2 all dashboard warning lights illuminate as normal. Then into starting position 3. Nothing. Starter motor doesn't crank and dash lights do not dim as would normally be expected. Also the steering lock remains on and strangeley the key does not hold in the ignition,it falls out.

Anybody come across this problem before or something similar?
All suggestions gratefully received.

Key is working as proved with the digi camera test. Could I be looking at the key module in the dash?

Yes I have had this problem on my W210, unfortunately it ws resolved with a new key. Basically, the imobiliser is not being turned off. That's what the dealer told me anyway, Not being technically minded about these things, couldn't understand that the door locking was working ok though:confused: I assume you have tried your spare key, that would eliminate the ignition lock.

All sorted. The key and lock had some burring which wouldn't allow full insertion (no jokes please madam!) Didn't want to force it thru fear of further damage. Nail file smoothed the edges. Now all OK.
Thanks to all who replied.:bannana:
