Hi everyone, it looks like the half century mark is approaching fast and in the eyes of some insurance companies we are safer and more responsible drivers. (In theory at least), Are there any insurers that still offer more competetive rates for the over 50s

Personally I don't think so anymore. From my experience they all factor in your age etc when quoting.

I got a very good deal from The Post Office this year. I am sure that most companies must factor in age but The Post Office had a beat renewal quote by £50 for over 50's. Worked for me.
On the other hand, my grandson is 17 and just bought his first car after passing his test. The car is a 2008 Ford Fiesta Zetec and the premium is £1929 if he fits a black box. They will refund him up to £450 if his driving is deemed acceptable. Over £3000 without it: and this from a company claiming to specialise in young drivers.

But what about the over 90's as my Father is 94, and still drives round London !

Hi,

We do offer competitive premiums for over 50's - Please feel free to PM me your details so I can arrange a call back from our quotes team.

Kind regards,
Dan
Adrian Flux Insurance

With all due respect your company quoted me £1450 for a SL 350
Allianze quoted £371 ...go figure !??

Why would it be cheaper??after 50 you become more dangerous to the road users!!:D

Yes but you drive less.... mostly because you forgot where you parked the car. And I speak from experience :(

Age discrimination is illegal now ...

We used to get free medicals at work from 45 onwards - that was no longer legal so had to be stopped. They also had to open up the graduate intake programme to applicants of any age :D

I believe you are referring to The Equality Act 2010 which makes it unlawful to discriminate against employees, job seekers and trainees because of their age.

Age is still a rating factor in insurance.

Yup I appreciate that, but wasn't there a company that got into trouble for offering preferential rates to women (even though that is statistically proven to be a factor too)?

Some years ago I was looking to hire an experienced administrator, with preferences for an older person, possibly even someone at retirement age.

I found this recruitment agency called Thirty Plus, who told me that they set up the business for this very purpose, but were no longer able to do this because according to the then-new legislation this would be illegal...

I ended up hiring a person through them, but it was disappointing to learn that you can not give preference to older people.

I don't think any company got into trouble over it, but gender is no longer permitted to be a rating factor in car insurance.

You could have just said that the older applicant was more suitable due to his experience of <insert relative experience here>.;)

Are you thinking of Sheila's Wheels ?

I'm sure that , as an employer , you could still interview a number of people , then choose your preferred candidate , without being required to give a reason .
