My other half has decided to change. We have always p/ex'd to save hassle, but on this occasion the offer was so low we've decided to hold on to her old car and try to sell it privately or, failing that, putting it into auction.

We've been told we can pick the new car up on Wed and obviously we will need to transfer her insurance to the new vehicle. I assume the old vehicle would thus be deemed uninsured and could therefore not be driven on the road?
Do insurance companies allow any leeway on this, or is there any other way of getting around this besides taking out a new policy for the vehicle?

...and if you don't insure it then it needs to be SORN'd.

Directline and Aviva have both insured a second car on the same policy for me before - up to 90 days IIRC. Directline charged a flat £30 per month and Aviva charged a flat £70 per month.

If you're getting it from a dealer most should offer free insurance for the first seven days, often from Aviva if it's not manufacturer linked insurance like Mercedes dealers do, which would give you a short overlap for nothing.

A friend of mine has recently gone through the same scenario and his insurance company allowed him to insure the car he was selling on a monthly basis.

I have no knowledge of your wife's car or what you were offered as a part-ex but if you put it to auction you will almost certainly end up with even less money after their commission is taken from an already low-end hammer price.

If her car is interesting put it up on here. If it's boring as sin... put it up here as well

Have done this a few times and the only real option was to live with paying two policies until old one was sold.. Which if you get a quick sale its no great issue..

I actually took it around a few local dealers and was happy with the deal I struck with one of them. It was a 53 plate Picasso diesel with 78k on the clock. Few bits and bobs needed tidying, but it was mechanically sound. Got £1.2k in the end, £500 more than a certain local car supermarket offered on a trade in on a 3 yr old Golf!

Yep, I'm doing this.

New car being delivered today with 7 day Mercedes insurance and keeping my old car insured until the end of the week until it's collected.

Full new policy with Mercedes follows the 7 day policy.

If you no longer have your wifes car insured you will need to SORN it. As soon as you SORN it, the ROAD TAX will be cancelled by the DVLA. If you do not send your Tax Disc to the DVLA you will lose any outstanding money owed to your wife.
