Intermittent Gear Change

I have a CLK 500, 2002, auto. Recently it has started to stick in 1st gear when setting off and no matter how many or how few rev's i give it it will not change up. It only happens now and then and will not change manually either. The only way to carry on driving is to stop turn all off and re-start.
Could this be an electrical fault? or could it be low on oil. I would like to check the transmission oil level but dont know how. All i can find is a tube at the back of the engine bay with a cap in it, and nothing attached, do i need a special dip stick? and if so where can i purchase one, and if it is low is this the filling tube as well?
If any of you guys out there can help i would be very greatfull as the only other option is an expensive trip to the dealer at £500 an hour or whatever they charge these day's
Cheers
Brian

You need a service dipstick to check the ATF level but I'm pretty sure that isn't the problem.

The problem sounds like either a MAF sensor fault or gearbox fault. You need to get the codes read really.

Any idea where to get a service dip stick from?

use somebody elses to check it, go round to the dealers and drive straight into the repair bays and collar the nearest tech and explain what you want to check, be nice, they should help, be nasty if they dont
