The car is a 1998 R129 V6 SL320. It is always garaged overnight, rarely goes out in the wet, has FMBSH and has only 52k miles (of which I have put on the last 5k miles since April 97).

On most occassions, it starts easily (whether cold or hot) at the first crank of the engine, and runs smoothly with no hint of any ignition problems.

Recently though, on three seperate occassions, she has been reluctant to start when she has been sitting on the driveway. Instrument panel lights are all bright and do not dim when cranking, engine cranks easily at a good speed, engine continues to crank several times (as usual) after the key is released, but there is no hint of any firing. This goes on for several (maybe 10 or even 15) attempts over say a 3-5 minute period, after which she then manages to start, and runs normally. If I then switch off and restart, she starts normally.

Weather conditions when this has happened have been dry but a little cold (say <10 degrees C).

Any advice as to how to better diagnose or solve the probem would be welcome. Thanks

Luckily on a 1998 it can be plugged into star to read the codes.. crankshaft sensor could be the issue.

Thanks - I assume this (plugging into Star) is something done at Main Dealer, or is there a laptop interface available?

Also, I did not notice any smell of fuel even after trying to start so many times, might this point to fuel delivery?

Yes the smell points to lack of spark... You will need a good MB specialist or dealer to plug in for you.

Thanks, but there is NO smell of fuel, so I thought I'm more likley to be looking at a fuel pump problem? Like you suggest, I'll take to specialist to plug into Star, but I'm not sure this will tell me much as the problem is intermittent and infrequent, or are codes stored on board?

Yes on your age of car they will be stored.
