Dave Bax remember that car you bought is almost 8 years old now and paintwork doesn't go on for ever. 
If the only rust is a pencil line at the edge of the wheel arch lip then the car's in excellent nick---- for its age. 
A car of that age with reasonable miles plus a few winters under its belt is bound to show a little wear and tear. If it didn't I would be suspicious. 
"Sharpish" panel edges are always vulnerable because they often don't have a thick layer of paint/undercoat/ galvanic material on them and are thus the first to succumb. Hope you enjoy your new Merc.
