iPad purchase advice.

Discovered that if I delete emails on the iPad it deletes them from my server which I don't want to happen. Can't find anything in Settings where that could be stopped. I Googled this and came up with answers I don't understand to do with imap or pop email settings :dk::dk:

Any ideas please?

You need to change from IMAP to POP. Find your server settings from the email provider and enter them manually when setting up the email account.

Am I looking for this on the iPad or my server please?

:fail-ed every exam I've ever sat. :D

Are you simply logging into your mail account using the iPad? If you follow this Add an email account on your iOS device you should end up with two of each message, one in your email host and one on the iPad. Deleting the latter does not delete from the host………at least it doesn't with me.

There are other help pages here https://www.apple.com/support/ipad/mail/https://www.apple.com/support/ipad/mail/

Good Luck!

Without knowing how you set your e-mail up on the iPad it's tricky to give you a step by step. IMAP is for multi-user mailbox access, so I'd be surprised if this is how you are setup. How did you set your ipad up to collect your email, exactly?

The steps as in GVM's URL above are what I followed when I first set it up. I'm on BT and it filled in the boxes itself iirc.

^ :D yes, that is what I did. And I've just checked and the Server Port is 465 and SSL is enabled.

Is it a BT thing? Hopefully a proper expert will be along to help.

On Virginmedia, I set up the same way and I can fetch emails when I want to (my choice to fetch rather than have them pushed) but when I delete from the device (iPad or iPhone), they remain in VM email account (and Mail on my MacBook as well).

Well, I didn't think so simply because this has only started since the iPad appeared. Previously I used an old Tosh laptop alongside the PC and BT was configured to not delete...which it didn't do, and still doesn't, if emails are deleted on the PC

Had a scout through some forums and seems to be several problems with BT, either with push, losing log in or what you are experiencing in relation to iPad Air. Glad I moved away years ago and will never go back to them……..hope you get it sorted.

3g gives you gps as well; great for using with navigational software both for driving as well as for waterborne nag.
new iPads out october so worth hanging on.
if you don't want a new one; worth having a look on apple's webiste for refurbished ones- good deals with full warranty (and brand new looking iPads without any scratches etc).

Doh:doh:. Don't say that. Morgan's going to get his heid kicked in after all. See post #35. :D

I think I'll be giving the MB Club stand at the NEC a big miss in November...:D

By default, if you let your device auto-configure a BT email account it will set it up as IMAP, which is why when you delete (or move from one folder to another) an email on your iPad it will carry out the same action on the server. You can verify this on your iPad by tapping Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > [your email account name]. Above the "Account" box it will say "IMAP".

If you don't want this to happen, you will have to set up a POP3 mail account on your iPad instead, but as Apple IOS will automatically attempt to auto-configure a new mail account and that will default to IMAP, you need to use a workaround and configure the account manually. So...

Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account

On the Add Account page, Tap Other, then on the next page Add Mail Account

Enter your name, email address, and a description for the account. Now the workaround: enter an incorrect password and tap Next. The incorrect password will prevent the account being auto-configured and you will see a screen something like this:

Where you can then choose whether to set the account up as IMAP or POP3.

Tap POP, and then correct the password in both the INCOMING MAIL SERVER and OUTGOING MAIL SERVER sections, then tap Save.

You may need to check further settings, but that's essentially it.

Don't forget to delete (or inactivate) the IMAP account that you've already set up.

Phil.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond to your post. I've done exactly as you said and am happy to say it works a treat. What a fine chap you are sir, a scholar and a gentleman. :thumb:

Thank-you. :D

D.

You're most welcome. I'm just glad to hear that it worked :)

This things doing my head in

:wallbash:

So now and all of a sudden it won't stay logged in to this or the Merc Club forum. Keeps asking if I want to download the app which I've already got and if I change a page it's gone and went and logged out again. When I click off pages lo and behold it goes to Google which I hadn't asked for.

:fail

Would this have anything to do with 8.02?

Possibly. All versions of IOS 8 seem to have various quirks. For example, my iPad periodically looses its wifi connection now when on IOS 7 it was 100% stable.

That is odd as mine is now fine but was loosing connection several times of an evening before updating to IOS 8.2
