Iphone USB Cable

I have a W204 and in the arm rest there is a USB socket but when i plug in my Apple USB lightning cable to charge my IPhone 6, it doesnt charge it or play songs....why?

I have as a alternative measure used one of the 3 cables that came with the car that ends in a female USB port, that will charge my phone but the head unit says "item not compatible" do I need to fiddle with something in the hidden menu?

Do you have Media Interface or iPod Interface or neither?

Tried the search and couldnt find any new info on it, i was wandering if their was an application to make it work.

There was a thread in the last few weeks where Richard or Alfie explained why the iPhone 6 lead couldn't be used to plug into the usb as you tried and a solution was suggested, if my memory serves.

Maybe go through posts by Alfie and Richard?
