I have a 2005 CLK cab that has the Merc Ipod kit installed and have been using my old ipod in the glovebox as a music supply. No complaints there.
I also have a Brodit active cradle mounted on a proclip for my iphone 3G. This charges the iphone via a 12V supply. I was wondering if it is possible to do away with my old ipod in the glovebox and connect the connector directly into the iphone and use the music from the iphone, but the tricky bit is that I want to keep it in the holder. I know it works OK, as I have tried it in the glovebox. But the problem seems to be that it will not charge. Is there a cable available that is not bulky that will fit into my Brodit active mount and then plug into the ipod kit connector in the glovebox, possibly via a connector that switches the wires to allow charging?
I am looking for a neat practical solution. I do not have the Merc telephone kit. I have a separate bluetooth one that works well.
Anyone done similar ??

I have the thbBURY phone kit with the cradle for my iPhone (not 3G , although they do a cradle for the 3G as well , the 3G phone being slightly larger and does not fit the original iPhone cradle) . The thb cradle has a 3.5mm mini jack socket on the bottom allowing you to take stereo audio out .

The new iPhone (3rd version) is due imminently (June 2009) , with rumoured sat-nav featuring 'turn by turn' directions , built-in FM transmitter for connection to car radio , up to 32Gb storage and more .

I have the aux in, but prefer using the Merc ipod kit as it is controllable by the steering wheel and displays on the dash. I would just like to use this kit with my Iphone in the Brodit holder therefore not usung the ipod in the glovebox. Its a connection/cable issue.
I thought just the version 3 software was being released next month for the Iphone with lots of upgrades and not a 'new iphone'.
