Any of the dealers that i contcated have either offered me c**p money or would not deal with me , because of the manual trans .What do you peeps reckon to a manual trans in an E , is it really that bad

No its better than the auto IMHO. Sell the car in Yorkshire or do a deal here, manual MB cars actually command a premium in this county, strange but true. Think the problem may be its a E200 which aren't that saleable compared to the E320's etc.

Had two manuals,190d and a e220cdi,both great cars and very good on the mpg.they are allways sought after by the taxi lads.

mine's manual and i love it - just cannot get on with autos. snobbery generally means they are cheaper than auto's but imho are far better/more reliable/more economical.

shoot me down in flames by all means (im still right )

No the manual transmission is not bad, it's just harder to sell cars with them as most people prefer autos. My C180 is a manual and i have no problems with it.

I had a 1996 C180 manual it was great. Think it depends on the car, I wouldn't want an S class in manual if they did one but c class works very well.

wondered about that..........

Reliability and economy; how much difference is there between auto/manual?

There seem to be very few manuals for sale.

erm ....... yes - unless you're 'Jake the peg , with an extra leg'

I don't like driving cars with more pedals than I have feet for :)

Yes.

we have one of each.Mine and hers. Manual is OK for a laugh - as per video - rest of the time what a pita! (IMHO of course)

The trouble is that the vast majority of MB owners/buyers prefer autos, hence manuals are very hard to sell and are worth less as a result. Doesn't help that MB manual boxes don't have the best reputation and the auto boxes are pretty good :)

Why would you buy a manual one when there's plenty of autos out there? Only if you specifically wanted a manual one (unusual) or if it was very cheap.

Hence a dealer buying stock to resale won't want to pay very much for one. He'll have to price it cheap to sell it on in a reasonable timeframe, and it's likely that it'll also take longer to sell (less people in the market for a manual MB).

It's been like this for years! ;)

thanks all for the different sides of the debate . I have allways reckoned that the choise between auto and manual was personial , and it seams that it really is .

I for one would never by a manual purely from the fact you have far less car control with a traditional auto ( I dont count the new DSG type boxes in this) It took me ages to find my CLK in manual and was the reason I bought a 230 and not a 320 or above. Again down to personal choice but Will is correct less people in the market for a manual MB its a bit of a niche area.

For the above read I would never buy an AUTO it was early when I posted and you cant edit after 30 mins now. :o

I would never buy an auto merc as it is just my experience that all the autos i have had all gave me serious problem in the first years of ownership, including the newish ones.

All the manuals i have had have never given me any problem whatsoever.

For reliability - search this forum for gearbox problems (many ££££) waaaaaaaaay more problems than manuals, yes there are more auto's than manuals out there so statistically understandable - but very few serious issues with manuals in comparison.

As far as economy is concerned - how many C220CDI auto's will regularly return 55mpg ?? There is bucketloads of torque available which you can choose to use (ie 40mph uphill in 5th ??) ; oh yes - more fun in the wet/snow as well :bannana:

It is personal choice after all

I drove a C180 manual for 3 years and 1 month. It wasn't bad, and you do get used to the foot operated parking brake. But I missed cruise on long journeys and could not wait to get back to auto.
