Is the sprinter any good?

May have a requirement for a large pick up / flat bed.

I see plenty of transits around, but is the sprinter from around 2008 - 2010 any good, and what are the potential pitfalls ?

I see on some ads for vw crafters that they make a lot of the fact that these are not fitted with a mb engine, alluding to it being a potential issue

Is the rusty sprinter a thing of the past, or are they all tarted up for sale

I know sod all about commercial vehicles

Thanks

We have a Sprinter Luton Body...2007, 140,000 miles...faultless.

Just put one of mine out to grass 08 plate with 500k on it and still goes like a train. If the 2012 that replaces it with a euro5 motor in it is as good I will be happy.

Sprinter is great!

My family have been running them for years! One has over 400k on it or something silly still going strong.

My dads own one is a V6 diesel and have to say it's lovely to drive for a van too.

All are the XLWB hi top variety. They actually get as many scrap tyres laced in the back as a Luton so it made sense to go for these as they are faster and lighter so better on fuel too.

Have driven lots, love them. Fast, capable vans.

The default large van for a lot of people, I would say around 80-85% will do lunar mileage without blinking an eye, copping for the other 15-20% would cause you to lose faith in Mercedes altogether.

Bit of a cliche but aim for the lowest mileage you can possibly afford and be very very wary of the mileages, there's thousands and thousands out there that have been clocked so if it looks more worn than it should then it might not be "honest".

Rust will also still be an issue at this age, I've seen 13 plates with tin worm, but if I had to do 200k in one it'd more than likely be my number one choice.

Also...

If it's Euro 4 2009, they're prone for the bottom end going but that is purely pot luck and also check injectors on that year.

Check that it has the original exhaust too, there's been an epidemic of car thefts and when some people get a quote for a new one they sometimes will "bypass the problem" if you know what I mean....

That's really useful, thank you very much, is there another van that might be more reliable, I'm not doing huge mileage by van standards, but would like something reliable

Thanks
