Italian GP 2016 (may contain spoilers)

On one of F1's best and fastest circuits at Monza today managed to serve up a total snoozefest that would have had Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna etc etc turning in their graves.
I agree with Flango, F1 is a joke. That wasn't racing as I remember it.

Anyone switching over to the MotoGP at Silverstone would have been on the edge of their seats at the close racing. The two sports are poles apart when it comes to excitement, close racing and spills.

Sorry to any F1 enthusiast who watches and doesn't like honest appraisal.

I didn't watch it today, which would have been unthinkable even just a few years ago for me.

Some of the magic has gone, the cars have become video games and driver effect has been dumbed down.

These cars are now 50% driven by a team that probably aren't even at the circuit. To a degree that any driver on that grid would bring home the Mercedes 1st and 2nd.

What's the point of having the finest drivers available piloting technogames?

It's such a shame, but I don't honestly know the solution but I kind of understand why JB has decided not to bother next year. I have a feeling Fred won't be far behind him.

Hamilton says poor start was down to "random variations"

Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes need to improve what he believes is a weakness in their starts after he lost a potential win in the Italian GP.

Hamilton was on pole but dropped to sixth after a bad start, with team-mate Nico Rosberg going on to win and reduce the championship lead to two points.

"We're still caught out by random variation from one race to another," Hamilton said.

"As you've seen with Nico and me quite a few times, we need to work on it."

Hamilton said he would be discussing the issue with his engineers when he goes to the Mercedes factory on Tuesday for a debrief ahead of the final seven races of the season.

"I can assure you on Tuesday it is the only thing I am going to work on because everything else we are doing really well," he said.

"We are not struggling with pole positions; it is just getting off the line."

Yeah, worst race this year by far Rodger.

Let's hope they'll be more exciting races to follow. Two point between Lewis & Nico. Could go either way. :dk:

Ant.

This is kind of what I mean.

If it was a gearstick and clutch pedal the only random variation is his leg.(unless of course there is a mechanical failure).

Is the driver actually driving the car anymore?

A reliable inside source is quoted as saying allegedly he had the car in the wrong setting on the grid, whoops!!!

So button beat him over three single seasons or are you adding up the points over three seasons together ?

How can you not understand? I couldn't have put it any simpler. :wallbash:

So, again, in the 3 years JB & LH were McLaren team mates JB outscored LH

I'm unable to respond to the rest of your post as its been edited. :thumb:

Drove through Imola today. What conditions did Bernie impose that stopped that track from being used?

Maybe they didn't pay the "safety" fee to Bernie?

Don't worry Bernie will be gone shortly after the takeover and hopefully when Carey has the reigns we'll get back to real racing.

I was going to bring this up with you last night Ian. In your opinion is it Bernies fault that current F1 has gone so sour?

(Although I do recall he was totally against the change from V8's to 1.6 V6's)

Hopefully the new owners can put this right?

Ant.

IMHO totally Bernie's fault that F1 has been ruined taking it into countries that don't deserve grand Prix racing at the expense of long established circuits been given short shrift because other countries could pay more. Totally ruining the British GP by doing a deal with Donnington then backing out and going back to Silverstone again because of money. The constant change of engine formula imposed by him. The F1 teams all want to go back to V10 and have been petitioning hard to do so but it falls on Bernie's deaf ears.

I don't believe we will ever see the glory days if V10 again but there has to be something better than these overgrown washing machines that are supposed to be today's F1 cars hopefully Carey will sort that

Allowing Countries to "buy" a Grand Prix was always going to be ruinous for the sport (and it has proven to be so). The biggest spoiler is the restrictions placed on testing & development coupled with the change to hybrid engines. These changes had absolutely nothing at all to do with F1 Racing or the fans who pay to watch and visit these events.

The facts remain that prove Bernie's lies. Fans are deserting sport in droves and yesterdays "event" demonstrates why. There is no longer a race. He who starts first or second will finish first or second, unless (as we see) they crash into each other, or struggle with over complicated technology that the hybrids demand.

Driving skills have been overshadowed by technology skills. If you cannot master the technology (and you need a team to do so) then it is unlikely that you will win races. Each mode effects another mode. Selecting black, changes green, which impacts on blue and so it goes on. The team see all this and usually can can tell the driver how to rectify it.

Yesterday LH told his team (Mid Race) that the start was "not their fault" now he is suggesting that they are involved, quoting "variables" in their launch sequence.

James Hunt must be rolling around laughing at that one!! Press the pedal to the metal was his "launch sequence".

I saw a comment here earlier, which I largely agree with, as it highlights to me what is happening and what Michael Schumacher foresaw. Pretty much any driver on today's grid would win races if handed Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg's Mercedes. The handling of the cars (therefor) the control of the cars is well within the limits of the car. Next year we may well see lap times 3 to 4 seconds quicker than we see this year. We will still have the same drivers.

Lastly when you have Fernando Alonso giving a full on belly laugh at his team instructions when actually still going flat out, that sums up why Jenson is baling out now. The technology is killing his driving ability. Do not forget that Ross Brawn (who knows about such things) described Jenson as single best car handler of his generation. His feedback to the team is recognised as exemplary. His ability to save fuel & tyres whist still racing is not touched. I believe that he is one of, if not the best driver on the grid today.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I quite like the hybrid turbo engines.

I also confess to liking them. Shame the noise isn't the same but you've got to move with the times. And let's face it they're hardly slow are they?

I'm quite used to the noise now.

Also the 1.6 V6's can't be blamed for the poor racing or lack of overtaking.
