Juddering when standing

So 2009 ML in 3L diesel form, and I noticed that occasionally when I come to a stop and still in drive I get a juddering
Out for a drive today and it’s basically every time I came to a stop
It’s like the transition is trying really hard to overpower he brakes and starts juddering
Knock it into neutral or park and it immediately stops
It also has a little judder when I pull away now as well

Any thoughts from our resident experts would be greatly appreciated

Not an expert however there are a few of things that spring to mind.

When was the last time the transmission was serviced? Either low fluid or a well overdue service could explain the vibration, if unsure then it’s worth getting it done anyway.

Have the engine and transmission mounts ever been replaced? Replacing them fixed a vibration at very low speeds in my car, which I felt when pulling up or pulling away.

Finally a torque converter passed it’s best could also explain the vibration. This is the most expensive of the three things I’ve mentioned so fingers crossed the other things sort it.

Thanks Bobby

To be honest I don’t actually think the transmission fluid has ever been changed
I always have it serviced at an independent specialist but I can’t remember them telling me it’s been changed

I think that’s probably my first point of call
Any idea what sort of price for this

It depends on the transmission, who you use and whereabouts you are, but I’d say £250-350. Automatic transmission specialists should be able to do the work for you too.

Edited to add: Whereabouts are you?

As you have no service history on the gearbox Getting a transmission service would be my first port of call .

Torque convertors have a stall setting built in depending on design and worn out fluid could affect this .

Service time.

What mileage is the car on ?
If it’s 100k+ may well be engine and transmission mounts .

Does kinda sound like a TC problem. I'd research it further (code reading for control/solenoid issue?) before committing to a fluid change. No point in changing the fluid twice - if the box has to be opened up subsequently for a TC repair.

Thanks for the input guys

I’m based in Stoke-on-Trent. Used to use Merx in Stoke but the closed last year so last service was done at their sister garage in Macclesfield

Cars just passed 180k so no spring chicken

It ironic I’ve done over 250 miles since Sunday and it’s not done it at all

I will see if the new Merx can give it a plug in and check the mounts for me

In that case I would suggest calling VMTP near Cannock. A few years ago I used them for a transmission service and they were excellent - their pricing was competitive too.

Given the potential for other issues, sending it to a transmission specialist might be prudent as they may diagnose another fault before servicing it, so you don’t pay the fluid change twice.

I won’t say who but a very well respected Mercedes specialist told me that they use VMTP for complex automatic transmission repairs, and that was good enough for me.

PS They did mine whilst I waited.
