A friend had about 8 large batteries blow up on his boat when a lead came loose and caused a spark..made a mess.

In a closed environment like the boot, there is always the risk of hydrogen bubbles around a weak battery and as the hydrogen is leaking from the battery, you don't want to rely on it having been wafted away .
