Just bought a W124 Cabriolet

Don't buy 16s - if you check tyre prices they are almost twice that of 15s and the car is still under wheeled if that bothers you. I have two w124s on my drive, one is 16 the other 15. The ride on the 15s is exceptional, the 16s nowhere near as nice.

I agree that the ride on the 15s is exceptionally plush. However it's only a rather minor compromise to go for 16s, especially when it's a very subtle and discreet, but effective modification to keep those wheelarches looking a little bit more filled in :thumb:

WRT the price of tyres, I think it depends on your annual mileage that perhaps makes this a show-stopping consideration.

I think the real challenge might be finding a set of 16" 8 holes with the right offset!

Na - I have never looked at a 16 inch wheeled w124 and thought that's better. An Amg wheeled one makes a statement, but to me paying an extra £60 a corner each 18 months is a dumb use of cash, especially as the money could be spent on stuff that is critical - keeping rust out, the engine and suspension in top condition and the brakes properly fettled.

Spend the money on ball joints, wishbones, bushings and springs instead. Get those right and you can put 18s on.

I guess that's the beauty of different opinions ;)

I prefer the modest nature of the 16s and use my money to keep the car in fine mechanical fettle...though I'll concede that the saving on tyres after a few years would definitely go towards taking care of the rusty bits!

That's good to know I have a buyer already! I quite like the alloys, but they just do not suit this car. I will be giving you first refusal when I can source the 8 holes, so watch this space. :thumb:
I'll be sticking some on e-bay soon, want to source an extra 17" as a spare then I will sell a full set of 5 15x7's.

Maybe I'm getting a bit old, but can you please explain a bit further?

Sorry, my grammar was a bit poor.

I have a set of 15" Sportline 8 hole wheels that I no longer need. I want to find a fifth 17" wheel to match the four I have on my car to use as a spare. This will free up the fifth 8 hole so that I can sell them as a set of five, which I personally would find more attractive on e-bay than 4.

Hope this clarifies what I admit was a poor post (I've had an early start today and even what I have written above is a bit confusing on reflection!)

Thank you for the clarification. :thumb: I did understand. If these will fit my car then I would be very interested. Is there any chance that you can email me pictures and price? :)

Sorry but as I have no idea what they are worth I will be sticking them on an auction with a lowish starting price. Sorry if this seems a bit mean spirited but I want to get the best return on them, and if I was to offer them directly to someone on this site I'd be honour bound to offer them to the guy that sold me the car who also wants them back.

As for whether they would fit your car, they are the perfect wheel for your car!!!

I'd like these for my cabriolet which has five spoke wheels something similar to the OP's wheels. My coupe has 8 hole wheels and next to each other IMHO the 8 holes are better. That's the beauty of subjective opinions, each person can have their own preferences:-)

I agree, the 8 holes are a perfect match, the only reason I have put the 17" AMG ones on mine is because it had them on when it was new (Well, similar multi piece ones) and now it matches a stamp in the back of it's service book. An odd reason I know.
Keep an eye on e-bay and try your luck!!

Please let me know when you do decide to auction them as I would be interested in placing a bid. :thumb:

I'm thinking it could be a full respray at some point due to the common rust problem, but can't be certain. It hasn't been in an accident so that is the only conclusion I came to. Unless anyone else has a different theory? :dk:

Dunno if it's had a respray but it left the factory painted 199 Blue Black.

Can I ask as to how you know this for certain? The advert states blue, the descriptions states blue/black so I am also a little confused now? :dk:

It's just that the history check revealed one colour change.

I looked up the build spec. PM an email address to me & I'll send you a copy.

I have found a set of 15 inch 8 hole alloys with tyres. These are the sizes:

Type: 205/55/15 8 hole
Tyre width: 205/55/15

The gentleman selling also gave me the following information: 205 60 15. I'm guessing that is for the tyre width, but why is it different from the above? Also, will these fit before I buy them?

Thanks.

The size you need is 205/60x15. The 60 (or 55) is the depth of the sidewall as a percentage of the tread width. 55 profile will be about 20.5mm smaller in diameter than the correct 60 profile.
