Don't buy 16s - if you check tyre prices they are almost twice that of 15s and the car is still under wheeled if that bothers you. I have two w124s on my drive, one is 16 the other 15. The ride on the 15s is exceptional, the 16s nowhere near as nice.
I agree that the ride on the 15s is exceptionally plush. However it's only a rather minor compromise to go for 16s, especially when it's a very subtle and discreet, but effective modification to keep those wheelarches looking a little bit more filled in
WRT the price of tyres, I think it depends on your annual mileage that perhaps makes this a show-stopping consideration.
I think the real challenge might be finding a set of 16" 8 holes with the right offset!
