Just bought a W124 Cabriolet

The size you need is 205/60x15. The 60 (or 55) is the depth of the sidewall as a percentage of the tread width. 55 profile will be about 20.5mm smaller in diameter than the correct 60 profile.

Thank you for the clarification. Just one more question (for now ) when I had a W210 the amg alloys were wider in the back then the front, is this what is needed for the cabriolet? Because the guy selling the 8 holes has given two figures I am not sure what the procedure is.

Your tyres need to be the same size at the front and the rear.

I think the real challenge might be finding a set of 16" 8 holes with the right offset!

MB do an 8 hole alloy with a 46 mm offset for the 124, Alloy Wheels Direct sell them too.......:)

Surely with that offset they would sit too far into the arch (assuming they are 7.5" or 7" wide it should be 37 to 42mm ish)

MB recommend 46 mm. For 15's it is 41 mm.

Actually I tried to delete my last post because it was rubbish, but clearly failed. It seems that there is a lot of tolerance with regard to the offset on 124 wheels.
My guess is that the ancient steering box configuration was so vague any influence offset made on handling and feedback was insignificant!!

I have to say that I am very confused. You guys seriously know your stuff and I was thinking, yeah some 15 inch 8 hole alloys will do the job!

So can someone please tell me the correct size alloys and correst size tyres please? Thank you guys for your help, and I have learned a lot.

Also an update, I was going to go tomorrow to have a look at the car and had booked my train ticket, but the fella selling the car has said that the logbook is the wrong one that they have sent! So have postponed my trip till probably next week now.

but it is only in 16 inch size and was never for the 124.

The only two sizes of 8 hole wheels for the 124 are :

1. 6.5x15 et44 using 195x65 tyres

2. 7x15 et41 using 205x60 tyres.

No. 2 wheel and tyre was originally for the sportline 124 models but were standard factory fit for later facelift 124 cabs.

Interestingly, the later 124 coupe kept with No. 1 spec wheel and tyre.

this is 100% correct in the UK.
The 500e had 16x8 8 holes and the offsets and width will foul the normal w124.
However the 400e/e420 model had an option of 16x7 which will fit the std w124's as this model didnt have the wider track of the 500e. These sized 8 holes are almost impossible to find as this model wasnt sold in the uk. One way to get around this is to buy early w210 16x7 8holes which will fit
and you will get your stealthy 16" look. Alloy wheels direct will do a set for around £700 off the top of my head. I have 16x7 8 holes on my coupe and they are fine. Some of they guys have seen them at a GTG last year and the overall response was positive. The ride is a little harder but not bone shaking hard.

There is an options book for the E Class Models MB publishes with the 16" 8 hole alloys with the 46 mm offset, although I agree with kth286, I have never seen a set fitted from factory to a non V8 124. But, my understanding is that they are an official 124 option, interestingly fitting them with non super low profile tyres will make the speedo indicate more accurately; makes me wonder if the sportline 124's should have had these as standard. They do look smart with the 46 mm offset, a little less "Prince of Wales look" than what you normally get when people use 8 hole 16"s off other MB models......:):)

I have a set of E500 8 hole rims (16x8 et34) for my estate and have had no problems with them at all. Admittedly I bought them without realising they should be used with the wider arches (They had a a124 part number, so thought they'd be ok), but honestly they work great, and the car feels better for the extra contact with the road and extra track width. Wearing 225/55 r16 tyres the rolling radius is slightly larger and actually corrects the normal w124 optimistic speedo.

The same size rims were standard for the R129 SL and are pretty cheap on ebay as a lot of SL drivers upgrades hence there isn't demsnd for these in the used market.

If you're intent on the 15" wheels, the link below is for an ended ebay listing for refurbed wheels with tyres that the seller listed 3 times and never managed to sell. He may take a good offer on them?

Good luck with the new car. I bet you can't wait for the spring!

Thanks for the link. I have seen these wheels for sale and have emailed the guy a few days ago to see if he will accept a lower offer.

Here are a set of the rarer 16x7.5 8 holes, I have looked at the add and the shipping cost isnt £195, they charge that and then refund the difference depending on the pallet cost to your post code. using my postcode the cost was £35 as an example
