Key broken in barrel...how can I get auto into D?????

Update; Car has been scrapped....just wasn't worth the hassle with the locked steering column and snapped key......car was purchased very cheaply and the economics of getting the barrel ground off and having a new one fitted would have cost more than the car cost.

So prior to going to the scrap yard yesterday (£110 for the scrap), I stripped it of all the useful bits and pieces and I aim to sell these on e-bay in the near future and hopefully I should recoup the cost paid for the car or possibly make a little profit.

Re the position for the holes on the barrel....having fiddled about with this the barrel was at position 2 when all the holes lined up.

Thats not entirely correct in my view. Basically you cant remove the lock *unless* its in position one as you cant see the holes in which to insert the release pins to release the lock.

You just need to get to the point in which you can see the holes. ;)

Be very careful here with the steering lock,if the barrel is removed incorrectly once the lock has engaged there is no Way to release it,, this means a new upper steering column

Also a myth, the steering lock is contained entirely within the lock arrangement itself. The only reference to the steering column is that removal of the whole lock assembley involves a bit of grinding (not much) which will mark a small patch of the steering column normally well out of sight hidden by the lower dash. No point in changing the entire column for this hidden cosmetic patch unless you want to run up a large bill for your customer.
