Just curious:

Can I buy the key fob batteries anywhere, or do they have to be replaced by an MB dealer? I was able to take out the battery compartment of the fob. There didn't seem to be anything too special about the 3V batteries; they look like they can be bought anywhere.

You havent got enough posts to' Private Message'yet (30), when you have PM member 'Alps' on here, he was selling genuine MB ones for £2 a pair posted. Alternatively you often see them on e-bay.

You don't have to go to MB. But you don't have to go cheap either. Go for Duracell...you'll not go wrong.

Let's face it, MB don't make batteries. Any of the well known brand names will be fine.

The main issue with the really cheap places is that there are *a lot* of counterfeit bateries around.

While changing the batteries, try to minimise the time the key is left without batteries. This will ensure that it will not need reprogramming.

Didn't know that. I've got spare keys without batteries which means if used again they'll need reprogramming?

My key no longer transmits the radio signal, and I was informed it was because I left it too long without battery. I will be interested to know if anyone else has experienced the same problem.

I guess you have the "more modern" key, not the one with the flip metal blade?

Do you mean you cannot lock/unlock doors or do you really mean it does not transmit the radio signal but does transmit the IR signal? In the latter case I would expect an issue at the car receiver.

If it does not lock/unlock doors at all, did you try switching on ignition first and then lock/unlock doors?

The key (and car) is 12 years old with a mechanical switch blade on the side. At present, the key locks and unlocks the door only by using the light signal (pointing at the door).

Genuine Panasonic,Varta,Duracell etc are fine. The last "official" ones I got from Mercedes were made by VARTA.

I would go to your local TESCO, Morrisons etc and buy them there. Easy access, reasonable price, packaged branded goods with readable expiry date and high turnover of stock.

Cheap ain't always a bargain....

Even if the packaging bears a premium brand name - doh!
