Kia Optima

I couldn't believe it when he said it was only costing him circa £200+ VAT a month, I made him show me the invoice from Kia.

I imagine that shows the residuals are not too scary, which the budget brands are often accused of.

Diesel vehicles sales up 27.5% so far in the first six months of 2012 in USA . Best sales performances by Audi / Mercedes / vw / Audi a3 tdi accounting for almost 65% of all a3 sales , mercrdes release refreshed glk with diesel engine for first time in the USA pushed sales up by 30% . Even in country's like america diesel engines are taking over ..

Undoubtedly diesels are catching on in the us however they are still in the minority and diesel Mercs are a rarity. I really don't have a problem with diesels they offer a solution for high mileage drivers on a budget and are a good way round our company car tax system. What i have an issue with is blinkered views from the diesel contingent on how they are the only sensible option. Diesels are dirty, unrefined, and lack proper performance however they are cheaper to run and are great for the budget customer and those that treat a car as purely a way of getting from a to b.

They emit less CO2, meet EU5 and 6 regulations and strict california clean air regs. I can't quite see where your dirty argument is coming from.

New they cost as much as a petrol. My fathers S class when new was over £60k (he got it for not much over half that a year later) so a £60k car is a budget one. Aye, right:rolleyes:. Did your C63 not cost less?

I drive mainly for pleasure, I drive a diesel. I like the fact its more efficient than a petrol, but its not slow, its not massively fast but the sorts of roads I drive on don't faciliate massive speeds, but the torque and power are good for the hilly bits and when I go down the motorway, the lower noise compared to a petrol revving harder is nice.

It's marketing that generally makes us favour one product over another. IMHO the technical discussion is of little interest to most consumers.

If Felix Baumgartner rocket was powered by diesel and if his space suit was covered in diesel sponsor logos etc etc people would think differently. In the meantime if Red Bull sold fuel people would buy it.

Good for you but i seem to remember a few days ago you were salitavating over a cls63 shooting brake lol. The 'dirty' thing has been done to death however i would add it is never nice getting diesel on your hands at the pumps and getting behind older diesels that pump out more sh1t than chenobyle!

Diesel car sales were banned in the USA for decades, but prior to that the USA was Mercedes largest diesel market, without any "tax breaks" or incentives.

You should look to interject at least a few facts into even some of your posts to gain some credibility, instead if constantly trying to insult people that make different choices to your own.

There are many people on this forum that could buy a number of C63, or more expensive cars for cash, but chose not to because it doesn't either suit what they want to spend their money on or do what they want.

It may have escaped your attention (as most things do), that this thread had got back on track until you appeared again.

I appreciate all cars, I like cars. I don't condemn the CLS shooting brake as inefficient, unplanet friendly CO2 emitting behemoth. No, I appreciate its pace, style and luxury.

I'd buy one in a heart beat if I could afford £90k on a car. However, for me, a 250cdi on a used one in 4 years time probably seems more realistic and I would enjoy it. Its a lovely car.

I've had petrol cars (V8 ones and I6 ones as well as ghastly 4pot ones) and getting petrol on your hand isn't that pleasant either. I've been behind older diesel cars too, and I have never found them bad to follow. Indeed way back, it was super unleaded that caused petrol cars to emit a sulphurous smell that rivalled the worse farts I could do.

Mrvix, have you owned a diesel yourself? If so, which one?
Your experience with diesels is very contrasting to mine.
I agree on getting diesel on skin isn't nice. So annoying when the stations run out of the gloves!

So we are not talking we are not discussing the present then, silly me lol. If you read the posts you will realise i did not resurrect this off subject discussion. I am out of this ridiculous thread.

I agree, Optima is a ridiculous name for a car. It reminds me too much of this

I agree with everything you say. You have a balanced view which i can appreciate, just a shame a certain other individual is not as open to others viewpoints. By the way i love your highland pics, probably the most picturesque part of the UK.

V12 i run a 12month old diesel fabia for work as i do mega mileage. It does what it says on the tin but it is not exactly enjoyable. I do it for cost purposes and would find it hard to justify abusing anything more expensive both with the mileage and on dirty building sites.

He is actually, I was in the pub with him and he was on about the brutal power in a 55k as we were talking about a members C63 estate car which he had a run in earlier. I remember the conversation. Another chap picked me up in his C63 and drove it fast down the A3. I said, its quick alright, but not as quick as I expected. He said, aye, it wasn't slow but lacked the brutal power and punch of the 55k....

Later that year, I discovered what he meant. The 55ks are brutal. 6months later, I drove a C63 with the MCT box, that seemed more on the money

Aside, I've toured most of the UK, and the highlands are the best. I'll be doing many more tours, as I find the C class comfortable enough to do long drives in, but small enough to chuck about our narrow roads.

As always I'm super-chilled.

Just so show how you are being level, can you please show me the posts I have missed where you point the same out to Mr Vix? :)

You'd already responded to MrVix in your own inimitable fashion. ;)

Lets have some facts. I like facts, they stop arguments.. :)

1: The optima looks nice.
2: It will give European manufacturers a proper scare.
3: It's only being marketed in diesel form in the UK for sound commercial reasons. (p.s. That wasn't my decision... :) )

4: The anti diesel crusade started in Post #12. I wasn't even aware the Optima was only available in diesel form until this thread.

One out of four there, I'd say.

You think the Optima looks nice, I think it looks OK, others may find it hideous - beauty's in the eye of the beholder, right?

Not sure what what a "proper scare" is or how it would be measured.

And there's no anti-diesel crusade - just people with differing opinions as to whether or not they like diesel cars. Free country and all that...

That the Optima is only being marketed with a diesel engine in the UK is a fact - I'll give you that one. :)

Fair enough. I have owned and run 3x220 s class. S500 and S320 petrol previously. This is my first diesel s class that I've had, coming up for a year now. I won't be going back to a petrol anytime soon.

He certainly does not come across well to me on this forum. Having said that I am sure there are some very nice people on this forum who are really nasty in the real world and vice versa. Me, I am just plain nasty all the time;);)

For a guy how head up a multi million pound company and quotes people buys diesel engines cars because they cart afford petrol engines and are in your words cheapskates . You contradict your self buy saying You run a diesel Fabia To keep the expense down ...

I am sure the very large diesels are great, I drove a friends 2 year old 330d last month and it was good however my argument is why not buy the petrol equivalent imo it sounds and goes better. If you are doing mega mileage fare enough but my friend does not and probably only does 8k a year. If you are saying you prefer the the more relaxed driving manner that the diesel engine may give you in an S class then I can easily see your reason for picking it. However in cars like the 3 series and c class which have sporting pretentions then surely the best way to go is petrol.
