Hi all, another problem for you please. My 300CE has developed a quite alarming knocking sound when driving - it has been coming and going for a while, but seems to be there all the time now. I was told a while ago that the centre propshaft support bush would need changing but the local garage has had a look and can't find anything wrong with it & suspect the diff!
Any ideas anyone please ??
Cheers
Chris

Sounds like the couplings have gone, same thing happened to me last year, around £80 to fix IIRC.

Sounds like the propshaft coupling or the rear diff mounts, which are quite commom on the W124 CE. Its a £200 job if the diff mounts as the diff needs to be dropped down to change.

I'm sure that you are positive where the noise is coming from, but my 300ce makes the same sound sometimes when turning, (more often when turning right), but mine sounds as if it is coming from the half-shafts rather than the prop-shaft.

But as you say, sometimes it doesn't do it for day's, then it appears from nowhere for a while, then it's gone again. ????? Irritating.

Thanks for the replies, the garage says they have looked at the couplings & cant see any problems - I think I'll take it somewhere else for another opinion.
Thanks for your thoughts & comments.

Problem Found

Hi again, the garage found that the noise was coming from the inner CV joint on the n/s driveshaft. This has now been replaced at a cost of £320 (£150 for the shaft - which can only be bought complete!)
This solved the problem for a few days but then my wife noticed the same noise but quieter - which must mean the other one needs replacing now as well - bummer!!
Oh well I just thought I'd let you know in case your cars are making the same noise (MangoMan) - meanwhile I'll get saving up for the next one.
Cheers

W124 Propshaft Couplings

Hi, I need to replace the front propshaft coupling on my W124 200TE Auto, and was quoted £123+VAT for the coupling at my local dealer. Seems a little excessive  for part only. From the above posts, it seems it is available elsewhere for rather less than this. Can anybody recommend a suitable contact?

Many thanks,

Creamy

Hi Creamy,
I had the job done at a garage in the end so I can't remember how much the part was - but I would try
www.eurocarparts.com
they supply most Merc spares a lot cheaper than Stealers & some are OEM as well.
cheers

£123 sounds a bit excessive.

Was that fitted??

(shameless self promotion...)

£123 was parts only. "Here you are Sir, that will be £123 plus VAT" said the man in the expensive suit as he hands over a small box. I must be old-fashioned - people who work in the parts dept. should have overalls on, not suits! I thanked him for his time and departed empty-handed.

Bought one from eurocarparts for £49, and fitted it today.

Thanks for the advice.

Creamy

Nick, I wish I'd seen your post before I went out today!

Regards,

Creamy
